Can the synaptics touchpad drivers be installed on any make/model laptop?

Right now I'm looking to install them on a Compaq Presario R3000. Is this possible?

Also, what is the latest version and where can I get it from?

Go to HP support and they will give you the exact ones you need for the r3000.
FYI if you use firefox use and older version of the drivers for the scroll feature, there seems to be a problem in the newer drivers and firefox.

Well, I came here to ask because when I went looking for them at the compaq download website, but they only offer the ALPS Touchpad Driver 1.0.

Does that mean I can't install Synaptics on it?

The r3000 comes with an Alps touchpad, so only an Alps touchpad driver will work, Synaptics drivers work only with Synaptics touchpads.

I had the same problem, go to the synaptics web site and get the newest driver. it fixes the scrolling issue in firefox and the annoying scrolling speed issues I had where it flys all over the screen =)
