    TPM chip...

    HP information is non-existant and tech support is beyond worthless regarding this. Does anyone know if the dv2700's have a tpm chip?

    except that HP says...most current HP prducts integrate the TPM chip. That's all I was able to find out after an hour on the phone with them today. Apparently the put them in...they just don't know WHAT they put them into.

    Can any one summ up the diff using TPM Drivelock feature vs. encrypting the HD using HP's Protect Tools. Both encrypt obviously :p

    TPM pushes the encryption down to the hardware level and works with software to provide more security than a software-only solution.

    As for HP's use of TPM, I believe the business models do have it--your's is an "entertainment" laptop and does not appear to have it. Here's your test--if you have vista business or ultimate, start bitlocker from control panel and it will check for a tpm chip

    there's no TPM in the consumer line of laptops
    i think that there are TPM chips in the business line though

    8510 has the TMP.. I'm storing the Protect Tools hard drive encryption token on the TPM. How's that encryption different from Drive Lock which is also supported on the TPM?

    If your mobo gets fried, aren't you locked out of the comp cause of the TPM?
