So I'm thinking about ordering a custom dv8000t ($200 off plus student discount=happy me), and I happened to see a little note next to the writeup on the remote that slides into the pcmia slot. The note said that it was not recommended if you're getting XP media center.... does anyone know why?

sorry, not sure what you mean.

TV Tuner/Remote requires Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Edition = The option, in "Operating System" category, is the only option that can be selected.

also XP Media Center Edition requires the 100GB HDD or higher.

not quite what i mean... i don't mean the remote that comes with the tv tuner... i mean the little one you can stick in the computer when you're not using it. if i'm gonna go somewhere and wanna use the remote, i don't wanna have to deal with the big one... here's the writeup right from the website...

    hi themanwiththeblacksax,
I have no clue what they are talking about. I have a dv5030z and it came with the little remote. It has MCE and a 100 gig hd. Are these requirements? I have no idea. Also the card does not fit in the pcmcia slot. There is a slot on the right side of my laptop that the remote stores in, but it is not the expansion card slot.
    Hope this helps.

Actually, you do need MCE with the tuner. The tuner is designed for MCE's recording function.

I believe that what you have is the Expresscard/54 Remote. It fits in the Express Card slot, the newer, faster version of the PC card. So does the remote work? I want to know if what HP said was true.

    Hi MGS2392,
Yes it does. I can do many things with the little critter. It also does fit in hte expansion slot, my error. I looked to the base of the slot and lo and behold the floor of the slot drops down to expose an otherwise hidden connector about 1 inch in length. BTW my machine does have XP MCE and no tv tuner.

The laptops that have the option to have MCE installed as an OS aren't supposed to use the square PC Card Mobile Remote because the ExpressCard one is designed for MCE functions.

I don't think that the remote won't work, it's just that the MCE ExpressCard Remote is much better suited for the dv5000 and dv8000 than the HP Mobile Remote is.

Oh man. It's just that I DO plan on getting a TV tuner. Since this fits in the Express Card slot, it'd be more convenient to have the remote in the PCMCIA slot

yeah i figured that the remote that comes with the tuner card would have more functionality... but for what the little one is useful for (portability) it will work, which is what i was concerned about...

    thanks for all the replies!

Not to change the subject too much...at first I thought I had to use the USB reciever that came with the MCE controller.

I was relieved it work with the IR port. For someone reason I thought only the HP ones would work...
