    Dear Pavilion users,

Would you help me in this comparison study between the DV6-61xx (6185) and the DV6-60xx (6096) models? These 2 are currently available at a local store, and I have been hearing a lot about the difference in the GPU switching mechanism between these 2 models.

    The Specs:

    CPU: i7-2630 for both
    GPU: 6770M 1GB for the DV6-6096 and 6770M 2GB for the DV6-6185
    RAM: 8GB both
    HDD: 1 TB both
    Screen: 15.6 Glossy both

Please shed the light on the following issues during the comparison:

    1) Mobile GPUs don't need more than 1.5GB of video memory. Thus, the 2GB model has an effective 1.5GB which is still better than 1GB. Did the owners notice any difference in FPS? (I am an avid gamer)

    2) Is is true that the 6770M in the 61xx model is not overclockable? i believe this is a downside for this laptop because the 6770M proved to have plenty of room for overclocking in the 60xx models accompanied by considerable boosts in FPS.

    2) The GPU switching issue. what is this all about? There are too many threads over here complaining and people preferring the DV6-60xx model over the newer one for reasons i failed to understand. Manual vs Automatic switching?

The DV6-6185 is for an extra $50 over the DV6-6096.

Hope the owners can help us new buyers on this one.

    Cheers.

At the moment, there is no known way to overclock the 6770M in the 61XX models. However, this may be resolved with future drivers. The same goes for the switchable graphics: it currently doesn't work with OpenGL.

To be honest, the big advantage the 61XX has over the 60XX is the matte 1920x1080 display. If both of them come with the same glossy 1366x768 display, then the 61XX is not worth it at all -- the 2GB of video memory is useless, all you're getting for your $50 is a brand new graphics switching scheme in dire need of driver updates.

Agreed. If you aren't getting the 1080p matte screen, then there's no advantage in the 6100 over the 6000. I doubt the 6770m will ever need more than 1GB... even desktop graphics card light years faster than the 6770m running ultra high resolution rarely need 1GB. You only need 2GB when you crossfire multiple video cards.

Get the 6096. You get manual graphics switching and it is cheaper. The graphics 1gb should be fine.
