    Hey guys,

What's up with the HP Pavilion dv6605us? Why is it so cheap?

I need a laptop for writing and I will be traveling with it a bit. Some folks recommended this one but, ah, if too cheap means trouble, then I don't want it....

its not a bad laptop for basic word processing/internet browsing,
but i would not recommend it if you are going to be doing anything graphics intensive

It's cheap because there's no Intel marketing tax. It has a shared memory GPU so don't plan on serious gaming, like v3loc1ty2.0 said, but most notebooks are like that and its GeForce Go 7150 is better than most. For your stated needs it looks like a good fit but plan on adding more RAM at some point (easy, buy Crucial DDR2-667 SODIMMs) as Vista is a memory hog.
