Okay ... I've had this computer for 3 weeks. And maybe I just never noticed it on my other computers because it was never a bright blue light, but my HDD light blinks consistently every few seconds, sometimes more than that, even when idle.

I've gotten rid of the paging file. I have 3 Gbs of RAM and I wanted to see if that would do it.

I stopped indexing, both by clicking on the drive, disabling it AND by going to Services and unchecking windows search.

I've disabled CA antivirus to see if that was doing it.

I don't notice any programs running in task manager.

Does anyone else notice their HDD light going constantly?

Should I just ignore it, or is my HDD actually going that much?

Does it necessarily mean something is still running in the background?

haha. i'm the same way. could it be system restore?

i have no pagefile, 3 Gb of ram, and no indexing like you. my hard drive light rarely comes on. are you sure it's your hard drive light and not a battery light or something?

Could be automatic defragmentaion (since it uses resources only at idle), compression enabled on your volumes or it may be a security related issue.

You can also check using the services list.

Click on start and type services in search and then click on services in the list.

I KNOW!!! And since I'm a control freak, I don't like my computer doing things that I don't want it to do! Lol. I know I have no control over most things in my life, but at LEAST let me control what my computer is doing!!! Lol.

Could be system restore, but I only thought that happens after you do something major??? And wouldn't that show up in the tasks?

Definitely not defragmentation - I took auto off.

I'll check the services again, but I don't think that's it either.

Maybe it's the wireless connection communicating with the LAN? Would that make the HDD go?

Maybe my sister is secretly saving her music on my public folder!!! Lol.

lol... try ctrl+alt+delete and add IO reads and IO writes. that should give you an idea, not as good as filemon.exe, but easier! you will be able to see which process is reading/writing.

i tried filemon.exe just for fun. looks like csrss.exe and nvsvc32.exe are running the most.

It's reading and writing to the processes lsass.exe and svchost.exe.

lsass.exe is a system process of the Microsoft Windows security mechanisms. It specifically deals with local security and login policies. This program is important for the stable and secure running of your computer and should not be terminated.

    -------------

svchost.exe is a system process belonging to the Microsoft Windows Operating System which handles processes executed from DLLs. This program is important for the stable and secure running of your computer and should not be terminated.

Yeah - I looked it up before ... I thought it might have something to do with the LAN - looks like that's what it is, because I'm using WIFI.

I got nothing. Maybe you need to clean your cache? I've never noticed a slow-down from using the net after long periods of time. Other possibilities could be your router. Does it get really hot? Because I used to have a router that would get really hot and slow the connection down - never figured out why - just bought a new router.

Yeah - ran virus scan. At first I got nervous, because I thought the "l" was and "I" in lsass.exe, which would be bad, because that's a very naughty virus. Of course, then I came to my senses. It would be very strange to have a virus or significant spyware within three weeks of owning this thing, especially since I really haven't gotten a chance to download porn - that's where your viruses come from people!!! Trust me - I know!
