Is it just me or what apple pulled with the retina mbp is what hp tried with the 1st and 2nd gen envy?

At least they will continue on that trend whereas hp pulled off for the cries of we need an ODD?

I wonder if HP stayed on that course if they would make something to compete or even smash the new retina mbp...

If I remember the original Envy did not have an ODD. HP also made the island keyboard years ago, but it didn't take. Seems like only Apple is able to market things properly and then HP back-peddles to catch up. The retina display is along the same lines as the old radiance marketing but the pixel density is much higher for a better picture.

I'm not an Apple fan at all, but I do love good displays. The best things you can invest in on a computer is a good screen and a good chair.

I think it was just too early for those changes. the odd was actually useful back then now its less and less. but apple does have that pull with fanboys and then the rest start wanting the same thing but cant afford it/ dont like what mac has to offer so they wait/influence windows companies to change their products to match apples. like i wanted macbook everything but no overheating, fhd, or osx. the envy 15 fulfilled it almost perfectly except for the color reproduction issue (which doesnt relaly matter to me) and at a cheaper cost

I would have to add to that list: good trackpad, good keyboard.

Not to mention that the retina display is IPS, with awesome contrast, great black levels, and diminished brightness compared to the high end mbp 15 display.

but yeah my point was, HP could and did this, however we got that envy 14 thing and then this new envy 15 to console us that we could ''match'' the mbp 15 that they still have, but not the retina mbp that they have now.

I still remember that i got the 1st gen envy 15, and sincerely I loved the pc, except the abysmal battery life, cooling issues, and the dreadfull keyboard. Send it back after sometime. Due to all those.

Im not an apple fan, actually after this mbp I swore that i wouldnt buy another apple product until they had a apple store here in brazil (customer support issues), but this mbp is making me think if I should give it one more shot. Of course I will have to buy it elsewhere, not here, U$ 5k for the base model is basically a total rip off.

    But to the point:

Quads, good mid range gpu, SSD with good speed, 8gb of ram standard (unthankfully soldered), retina display IPS, the best trackpad out there, and hopefully the same average keyboard.

The current talk is that its cooler handling average tasks, currently we are still waiting for the gaming temps

If I have $2200 to spend i would've gotten it but I got the brand new envy for practically half the price (1150 tax included)...
I think HP focus more on targeting affordability with consumers while apple focus on fanciness and best quality... You get what you pay for... Though it may be a ripoff with apple, you can't say their computers arnt nice.

Engadget's review is up and the part I was most curious about is covered:

"Still, it only took a few minutes of hacking and slashing (Diablo 3) to get the bottom of this unit warm, and then noticeably hot. That, of course, caused the redesigned fan system to pop on, which draws in air from a pair of vents on the left and right sides of the bottom of the chassis and blows it out through the hinge. It's been optimized to create a less obnoxious sort of whirring noise. Indeed it's a subtle and unobtrusive white kind of sound, but it's definitely not silent. In fact, the fan doesn't sound particularly different than that on the current MacBook Air, though a few decibels less obtrusive. Still, you'll always know when your system is really cranking."

Yeah, I knew it was going to get hot, how much is the point, they could have put a case temp pic.

My mbp 13 bottom gets hot, but not as hot as the envy 15 gen 1, while gaming. This is a common design flaw on metal clad notebooks, the chassis also, inevitably, functions as a heatsink.

Im waiting for anand review on this, he surely will put some case temps in there and the noise levels will be measured.

Im finding it hard to believe that engadget and ars in their articles got specs and other things wrong. incredible, though the haste is justified.

check the video in their review (engadget) and the write up from ars.

you cant really compare the envy to the new mbp in any way

track pad was inferior, display is far inferior (non ips, low res, bad viewing angles, etc), old 15s got super hot and just werent designed as well, and so on

hp is all about compromise and 30% off coupons, apple is about going for broke and making the consumer pay for high end.

I actually can in terms of what I just did, its quite feasible, they were in the same category, this new retina and the 1st and 2nd gen envy 15.

Non ODD, similar design language (I liked a lot the etching), good gpu and cpu, Raid 0 SSDs, similar price point in the 1st envy 15 (I bought mine for 2.5k with the SSD), both use great displays...

For me HP paved a way that they could have followed, instead they backpedaled for a more conservative approach, one that diluded the line for me, and it made a success (envy 14).

HP made a great laptop that dished out too much heat for its own good, and got rid of a useless space taker, for me. It was a great machine that had its flaws, much like the RMBP has.

Another thing upgradability was much better on the envy 15, RMBP is just static, you buy what you get.
