So, I've been playing around configuring new laptops. This one appeals to me because of the huge screen (I pretty much want a replacement desktop), and it seemed like I was able to get better spex for less money with HP, compared to Dell and Sony.

The only thing stopping me from buying (besides waiting til Jul 1 for the free Windows 7 upgrade), is the customer service horror stories I've heard. I've always bought Dells, and have always been satisfied with the CS. Is the HP CS really that bad? Or at least bad enough to justify getting a more expensive Dell/Sony over HP?

They have a big coupon every month. As for HP horror stories, if you look at the Dell thread, there are alot too.

I know that all companies have their horror stories. I'm in no way a 'fanboy' or anything like that with Dell, but I've always been very happy with their CS. The laptop itself (inspiron 9300) had it's power and motherboard issues, but technicians always came to my house and fixed it without any hassle.

At this point it doesn't really make sense to buy a laptop until the Windows 7 upgrade coupon comes out, so I don't mind waiting a bit. But is the HDX18t as good a deal as it seems?

Well, I bought one, and I think it is an awesome deal. I'm worried about CS, too, but I worry about that with any computer company. If you get it at Costco, you have 90 days to evaluate it and return it if you don't like the laptop. However, you won't get the 30% discount from Costco when it's available at HP. Costco's prices are pretty close to HP's except when they offer the big coupons. I bought the QX9300 Quad Core, and the 30% coupon knocked off $1000+ off of the price.

The 18.4" screen is wonderful. I love having two web pages side by side with no overlap.

I researched my purchase for 3 months with the HP HDX16, Dell XPS16, Sony FW series. All have great stuff but the Dell has heat and build issues and Sony was just too expensive for what you get. I choose HP because of the coupons they offer, which saved me $900+ on my maxed out HDX16. Greatest value for the money.

I don't know about HP's CS tho but I'm hoping I won't need them. I got the 2 year extended warranty just in case and it still came out almost $1000 lower then similarly configured ones from other companies.

If you're waiting for windows7, and are thinking about the purchase, I say get it with the lowest OS and then upgrade it later.
