I'm thinking of buying an HP dv6700t for surfing and a little light gaming. I can get the following for $1150.
Genuine Windows Vista Home Premium (32-bit)
ntel(R) Core(TM) 2 Duo Pprocessor T7250 (2.00 GHz, 2 MB L2 Cache, 800MHz FSB)
15.4" WXGA High-Definition HP BrightView Widescreen Display (1280 x 800)
3GB DDR2 System Memory
256MB NVIDIA GeForce 8400M GS
ntel(R) PRO/Wireless 4965AGN
250GB 5400RPM SATA Hard Drive
LightScribe SuperMulti 8X DVD+/-RW
Primary Battery 12 Cell Lithium Ion Battery
I don't have any experience with HP notebooks and I wanted to know what you guys think.
Is this a solid machine?
Is it a good price?
I hear that HP puts out coupons every month, should I wait to buy it?
Am I going to regret it if I don't pay for the warranty?
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

I love my 6700t. Mine is almost configured exactly like yours. Before I bought this computer, I also looked at (in depth) the T61, and the M1530. I found out that I liked the dv6700t the best out of all of them, not only for design and style, but it's by far the best bang for the buck. I ordered mine with the finerprint scanner, web cam, 3GB, etc. etc. If you were to order the same spec.'ed out laptop from Dell (the m1530) or Lenovo (T61) they were both about $1500 give or take. I bought my PC for about $1020, which included tax and shipping ! I've had my DV6700t for about a week, and I love it so far. It's by far the best laptop I've owned.

I think you can get better deals than that if you look at some dells, specifically the vostro line.
Also, try to get as little ram as possible initially and then upgrade yourself. Manufacturers overcharge you on ram upgrades, and you can save a lot of money by doing it yourself. -
I strongly recommend against HP if you care about tech support
I recently had my friend tell me about his experience with HP, his motherboard mysteriously fried, and two calls to tech support (there were a few weeks or something left on the warranty) had them telling her to take the motherboard out and put it back in
The first time she called, before she even gave them a serial number they instantly said that it was not under warranty
do NOT go with HP if you care about tech support
Edit: Dell Vostro, XPS, or Sager would be a good bet -
Wait a few days, maybe a week. There are no deals out for them right now.
-
I would also recommend a dell if you are going to do somw gaming. That is the only drawback with the hp. The graphic card

If I were you, I'd wait to see if any deals come out. You will notice a sticky thread in the HP section that says coupons and student discounts, just keep checking that occasionally and see if someone posts something new about a coupon. -
There was just a 500$ coupon that expired a couple of days ago. I say wait a couple more weeks for another coupon to come out. Besides I think the amount that your paying for that config is a little high. I paid peanuts for mine, sub 700$.
-
I would also wait a few weeks for the next coupon. -
yea, dells are not worth the price.

Go to www.newegg.com
Here are models that will fit your laptop:
http://www.newegg.com/Store/SubCategory.aspx?SubCategory=381&name=Laptop-Memory
If you look on the bottom of the left side you will notice the speed of the RAM, you can choose from DDR2 667Mhz PC5300 or PC5400. -
There should be plenty of links... I would recommend Kingston with their 25% off discount. Memory for my DV6772NR comes out to:
one 1Gb module - $27
one 2Gb module - $55 -
Thanks for all the replies, you've all been really helpful!
I looked into the vostro and it looks like I can get the same specs for about $100 cheaper. I'm still going to wait until the new hp coupons come out to see what kind of deals they're offering.
Putting in my own RAM seems like a great idea but i'm a little wary of opening my new computer up. How hard is it to insert my own RAM? -
It is generally very simple to add new ram. All you have to do is, there is a slot located on the bottom of your laptop. All you do is open it up, and insert the new stick of ram. It's basically plug and play. As soon as you insert the new ram, the computer will (usually) automatically sence that it's there. So, just go into "computer" and your extra ram should already be in the system.
Very simple. -
It is very easy to install RAM, and also, you can download a manual from HP's website that will show you step by step on how to take out and put in the RAM.
-
Usually how many slots are there for ram in Hp 6000 series notebooks. and how many are free if we order 2Gb of memory from HP in built..
-
Would this memory fit into dv6700t series notebook??

or you can just take one out and have a 1GB+2GB so you'll have 3GB, the best amount if your using vista 32bit, if your using vista 64bit get 4GB of ram.
