Hi, i am Federico, last week i bought a dv6-1054cl and it came with Vista Home Premium on it, now i'm thinking on upgrading to Windows 7 and as you all know there are 2 ways, an update install or a clean one. I have burn the recovery dvds the same day i got it. Now i want to know if i do a clean windows 7 install, with those discs i can install whenever i want vista home premuim and it's going to be like when i bought it (with al the hp stuff and more).
Do i lost my warrany doing that?
You people what can you recommend me, should i make the step to 7 or i should stay with vista for at least the year of the warrany hehe??
Anywhere i can download all the software i have preinstalled on my laptop??
Thanks a lot.
Sorry if this is a re-post!
All the best.

If you can, I would recommend taking the unit back and getting one with Win 7 installed on it. Win 7 units will also likely have DDR3 RAM instead of DDR2 which will give you a tick better performance and use less power than DDR2.
To answer your questions though:
- Upgrading to Win 7 does not void your warranty. If fact, you should be eligible for a free upgrade disk.
- The recovery disks you made will restore the unit to its delivery state.
- Much, if not all, of the additional HP installed software is located in the Software Setup folder (swsetup). Though slightly encrypted you can figure out what is in each folder if you try. Make a copy of the folder and keep it somewhere safe.
- You can find drivers for your notebook here: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/...lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&lang=en&cc=us&submit=Go »
Whether you keep Vista or Win 7 is a personal choice. Given that Win 7 seems to have so few issues however, Id lean toward going with Win 7. -
I bought this laptop in Uruguay not in the US so taking it back it's not an option hehe but thanks for the advice though.
I've tried with the online upgrade a couple days ago and don't know why it told me i wasn't able for that, so that's why i'm asking all this.
I burn the SWSetup folder content already so that's safe now. My next question is, if i do a clean/fresh install of Win 7, it's going to delete the Recovery (D: ) partition too?
And then, if someday i want to go back to Vista to it's delivery state, do i need the Vista Home Premium DVD or with the backup dvds it's fine?
If i need the Vista Original DVD, do i need a Retail or an OEM? 'Cause the key i have is an HP OEM one so i don't know if it's going to work on a full vista dvd.
Thanks again for your answers and time. -
If you burned the recovery disks already, you can delete Recovery D. Just make sure you keep the burned recovery disks in a known place.
The current serial number on your HP is different than the one on the bottom of the laptop. I found this out a while back, but you can use the one on the bottom sticker.
If you want to re-install Windows Vista to it's delivery state/original software it came with when you first bought, you could use the recovery disks you burned. That will also re-install the Recover (Dpartition from my experience in the past.
If you plan on installing Windows 7, I'd do a clean install as it will not have any extra trail software installed from HP. Just make sure to save the SWsetup folder on a thumbdrive/disc.
The drivers should be available online, just type in your specific model and get the Windows 7 drivers from HP's site.
Thinking on new laptop formating
