Because hp.com's pricing is so much worse than buying a pre-configured model from a third party site, it would be much more convenient to buy an underconfigured model and then to simply buy and upgrade the aforementioned components separately.
My only question is would such a task be reasonably easy or might I run into proprietary issues involving the BIOS rejecting certain brands or timings on the RAM or something of the like?

There isn't much customizing on HP's site. The hard drive and memory are fairly easily upgraded. The optical drive is gonna be more tricky because it is a modular drive. You can look on the internet or eBay for a better price, but you won't get the security of HP's return policy.

The problem is that I really was looking forward to having a Lightscribe DVD burner that it looks like I cannot get without buying and customizing from hp.com, in which case the price is already so much higher than third party resellers (techonweb.com etc) that it ends up being about $2500 regardless to get the components I'm looking at.
Third party upgrades RAM, HDD, Optical Drive on nc8430?
