I have been looking for a 17" DTR notebook to replace my eMachines 6809... Nothing wrong with the 6809, I just need more screen real estate for ACAD and Photoshop. I also need a numeric keypad for coordinate input.

This is about a $400-500 savings over a similarly spec'd system from eithe Toshiba or Gateway.

What concerns me is the build quality and battery life. I'd appreciate any input people have on these issues.

    Thanks!

You will get poor battery life for sure. Probably around 1 to 1:30 hours.

Just curious, if all you really want is a bigger screen, why not just get a large monitor instead? Its not like you'll be carrying around the ZD8000 that much will you?

Yeah, I've been thinking about that, upgrade to a bigger external monitor, wireless keyboard and more RAM. I already purchased an 80GB external drive. Also, a USB numeric keypad would be far cheaper. Cost of upgrading my current ride would be about $750 for the monitor and RAM.

$750!?!?!?!? I know you can get both for cheaper, that is way overpriced.

    No.

The 20" Dell LCD will set me back $500 and the RAM about $150, plus extra $$$ for keyboard, etc... I'm running AutoCAD, I need 1600x1200 res.
