This is an FYI
I have found that the HP laptops, especially with Vista are very problematic.
I am on my second DV 9700 series HP laptop and I wish I had found this software when I had my first. It would have saved me days of reinstalling the operating system and program software and has already helped on my current DV 9700t.
The software is Acronis True Image 11 from Acronis.Com. If you have a 2nd HDD in your laptop or for that matter an external HDD hooked up to it, this piece of backup software is a real time saver. It will copy an exact image of your C drive and store it on the 2nd drive as a backup. It takes about 30 minutes to back it up. To recover, you simply enter the program and tell it to restore from the backed up copy. It will evaluate your current C drive, restart you computer, erase the C drive partition (leaving the E drive where all the original files are stored when you received your computer) and restore from the backed up copy. If you cant get into the operating system, you can boot using the Acronis boot disk (you can create this from the software)
Its great if you install some software that screws up your computer (especially with Vista). I installed an update to QuickPlay last week and after that it wouldnt scan my digital OTA TV Tuner channels.
Another instance, I tried to network with my other 2 XP computers in the house and ended up not being able to get onto the internet etc.
Windows system restore is OK but doesnt always work, Acronis does. I used it the other night to clone my HTPCs 80GB HDD and put a larger HDD onto it.
Its quite inexpensive and is worth every cent you spend on it.
