This is how you do a clean to almost clean Vista install on a HP, it may also work with other company built computers but I am not sure but I am assuming this works in almost the same way with other companies as setup names may have changed.
First is you do a hp recovery or system recovery, what ever HP calls it in your area, you are NOT doing a MS restore here.
Do a HP system recovery to the same drive letter if you have partitioned the drives, it saves you time, but if you still do a full HP systems recovery it will still work, you will have to reparation the drives through Vista latter, I am using Vista 64 Ultimate and I am not sure if you can partition your drives within other versions of Vista .
Start by doing a HP recovery, this will re-format your drive and start a image install, this will take some time as you know, anywhere from 20 to 30 min maybe more.
When you see FBI on your taskbar at the bottom this is when you spring into action, TIME IS OF THE ESSANCE HERE, you only have about 2 to 3 maybe a little min to do the job here.
When the FBI shows up in your button taskbar, hit your Windows button on you keyboard go to Computer then to your OS hard drive (usually c if not otherwise), then open c and go to the folder SwSetup, inside this folder will be all the software or bloatware to be installed on your computer, now if you should choose this move, go down to your taskbar and close the FBI process, this will not stop the install, it will buy you more time to do what you have to do, the install is still running in the background , what I think the FBI window is doing is its is decompressing the bloatware and other files as if you goto the control panel and systems you may see a couple of drop downs of devices, what it looks like its doing is it is installing the device drivers at that time so don’t be too alarmed, you are now in the SwSetup folder, this is the folder you want, this is where the enemy resides, this is where is determined if you computer will run good or like ****, you can start by opening the folder to see what is in it, you can also tell by the name for example MSworks , Muvee, Norton AV folder will say NTVC or NTCV or something along that line, there is a bunch of folders there full of stuff, now you have to DO THE CHECKING FAST, as soon as you determine you don’t want it, DELETE it, this will goto the recycling bin and cant be installed, REMEMBER ALL THIS MUST BE DONE IN 2 to 3MIN depending on your computer setup, after the 2 to 3 min the computer will reboot, the folders you have deleted will be bypassed by the installer thus not getting installed, after that reboot the FBI will show up on the bottom taskbar again, you will still have some time to go back into the SwSetup folder to delete some more programs but beware on the second FBI reboot, it seems like it is installing the programs from top to bottom, you can still close the FBI window, just do it at the taskbar at the botton, right click and close that will buy you a little more time, my suggestion is to do the bloatware cleaning at the first FBI pass, NOTE YOU MAY HAVE TO GO THROUGH THIS PROCEDURE 2 OR MORE TIMES TO GET EVERYTHING, you do not have to empty the recycle bin but you can if you have time and the thought that you want it gone, you can do it latter because emptying the recycle bin with all those huge programs will take a while when you can be searching out more useless programs, look for the HP Games folder and delete it as you get rid of the WildTangent process running in the background, many people have said this maybe legal spyware or not, the fact is if companies don’t tell you what it is or tell you its nothing, get rid of it.
Lets do a little recap, remember you may have to do this procedure more then once, I did it 6 times before I called my system clean, the secret is SPEED AND KNOWING WHAT PROGRAMS ARE IN THE SwSetup folder, I have eliminated things like hp health check also known as hphlthchk.exe ( or something like that, the spelling is almost like I listed, DO NOT DELETE ANYTHING THAT HAS hpqwmiex listed, this is needed if you have a webcam on the lid of your laptop or if you have a scanner or something of that sort, like I said you may have to do this procedure a few times to get it right, if you are happy and did not get all you want, just delete it and run a registry clean, this will take some practice, patients’ and time, but the results are spectacular and your system will be more faster, stable and less of a pain in the ass, please post your results and other things you found on this thread, Im not sure if I got everything and it takes people to share results in order to make things run well, if you have any problems, post it and I or somebody else will address it, Im not perfect I just want to help with what I know with what other people know in order to make our computers run well without having companies tell us what we want, it yours and my money, lets make it harder to get.
Thanks all

Oh by the way I have done extensive research to registry cleaners, I will post later, but here is a clue, stay away from registry cleaning software by going to the site and click on contacts, if the site only has email contact and does not mention where they reside, stay AWAY, do not buy, many different registry cleaners are made by the same place and they do not work and are a fraud.

wait, so do you have to reformat 6 times to clear everything? I might try this, but I ordered a anytime upgrade disc from comp usa 2 days ago, so if that shows up, ill try that out first
-
I reformated 6 or more times to study what the installers were doing, you cant figure out much just by one pass. -
kewl thnx, now need a list of the folders wut to delete to get rid of the uneeded junk ya?
-

I already deleted the swsetup folder.. I burned that onto a DVD R disc.. So if its gone already, what happens? I thought my recovery discs already included the swsetup files. I ordered the anytime dvd too, but it shipped on the 11th and I still don't have it. I am getting worried it got lost in mail or something. There is no tracking number on my email they sent. I wish this came from somebody other then compusa, they are so incompetent.

Damm 6 times -
Rather than try to race the clock trying to decide what stays and what goes when the bloatware is being installed, would this simpler approach work? (1) save the SwSetup directory to an external drive before doing the HP recovery, (2) when the recovery process starts, delete everything in the SwSetup as soon as possible, then (3) after installation, install the desired drivers and software from the SwSetup directory saved on the external drive?
-
yeah, but for anybody who ordered the anytime upgrade disc, why does it come as a download in the compusa e-mail. Is it coming through normal mail? I tried ordering from amazon, and a few a days later, they canceled my order and refunded the money. I hope they're still producing these discs.

I just tried using this method to get a clean install but was unsuccessful. At time point was i able to access the taskbar to close the FBI manager.
How did u guys close the fbi manager?
i was using the hp recovery cds -
In my C:\swsetup folder is a text file called swsetup.
Is this a script file that restore uses to install the programs as you say, top to bottom?
Could this be edited to get rid og the junkware and some how put back on to a restore disk. If so, what would be the procedure.
Or could you point Windows restore to the DVD that you have saved the swsetup folder with the edited text file???

thats just a text file with the last of programs to install. i think the script is in the hidden HP folder on c drive.
I just tried recovering from the partition. I still have no access to the taskbar until everything is complete?
any help would be appreciated -
after you do the recovery disks, and when windows loads, type msconfig in the run window.
uncheck FBI GUI manager in the startup tab (if i remember right) That stops it.
You can also hit the window button on the bottom left of yer keyboard to bring up the task bar (doesn't always work tho) to type msconfig, too. -
thanks for your input.
i'll give the system restore another go
This is how to do a clean or almost clean install with recovery disk or partition
