So I returned my dv2700t and ordered a new dv4t which i received today with much anticipation. Unfortunately, as soon as I turned it on, I get an error message saying "No bootable device -- insert boot disk and press any key" !?!
I went into the BIOS and did HP's little hard drive test and it passed fine, so I don't know what the issue is? I consider myself somewhat knowledgable with computers, so if anyone has any suggestions i would greatly appreciate it. I just think that its ridiculous that it came from the factory this way...

ps>i tried to take out the hard drive, but it didn't seem to want to budge after i took out the screws, so if someone has some more detailed instructions then i could attempt that again...

HDD might not be seated or the boot files might be missing.Try reinstalling the OS.

Can anyone say time to return? Seriously, if that's the level of service...

    Is that machine used?

It is a little hard to reinstall the OS when you have to use the hard drive image to burn the CDs.

I totally agree with Greg. Time for a return, and get a properly imaged hdd. Just poor of HP.
And Greg, he said new dv4t. :p But I wonder if it was a return though.

yea i can't really reinstall the OS since HP doesn't include recovery cd's anymore...you have to make them once you're in Vista...

RAMBO29 you mentioned that the HDD might not be seated correctly? what does that mean and how do i tell?

thanks...and yes i might have to return it which sucks cause i need it for school...

I've seen on the configuration page of some of the models, you can select recovery discs for $19. Where did you buy yours at?

You may try using the partition if it is there. Assuming something is corrupted, when you start the notebook, it should breifly give you a few F Key options. One of those would be HP Recovery or something to that affect. Try hitting that and see if it gives you the partition to reimage from. As for reseating the drive, HP provides pdfs free of charge on their support section of their website that goes into detail on step by step of how to remove and replace parts. It should be in the manuals section for your model.

I know the BIOS automatically detects the hard drive and boots the computer using the hard drive. But, did you check the booting options such as the CD/DVD ROM, the hard drive, or other input devices? See whether the hard drive is checked as one of the booting devices.
I'm not sure, but if you still have the same problem after checking that, then they must have forgotten to install Windows...

You can.... but... what version of Windows Vista did you choose for the dv4t?

If you chose Buisness or Ultimate, don't install your Vista Business.
You paid at least 100 dollars. If it is Home Premium, I think you can just install yours. However, if even it is Home Premium, you can claim HP should send a hard drive with an image of the version of Windows Vista that you selected or exchange your notebook.

yea i'd rather have them send me a correctly formated hard drive...

do the people saying maybe it was returned...could this actually be true? i did notice the ram cover has a scratch on it, but i thought that was just from the factory...

I know my statement isn't contributing anything, but this is the first that I hear of something like this.
