I picked up a Chronos and I'm pretty satisfied except a section of the keyboard gets hot to the touch while gaming on parts of the keyboard. What's everyone's experience her with the envy 15's and gaming?

it remains cool. even with heavy gaming (skyrim) with max OC it never gets "hot" maybe if u are playin in an 85+f then it might get hot. as for where it gets "warm" the right palm rest a tad bit cause of the harddrive. and the top right corner right near the hinge. as for the left side, it remains cool. internal temps for gpu the highest i ever got was 75C with max oc and that was in an 80ish F room. with stock clocks it doesnt go above 65. as for gaming performance, its right under the 650m so its gonna be faster than the samsung (it has 640m right?) it does have 2 fans for excellent cooling however they are always on but if u got any background noise they will be drowned out.

tl:dr it stays cool. the keyboard areas required for gaming stay cool compared to warm. 7750m performs better than 640m and right under 650m

That's great. I heard some people say that they had problems with graphics switching on the unit. Would you say the switching has been a problem for you? If it's not switching automatically to use photoshop or something that's fine for me, Intel HD 4000 is very capable for everything except high end games anyway.

My samsung 14 inch actually has a gt 630m. I'd prefer a 14 incher but the hp pavilion I'm looking at that's 14 inches if I trick it out ends up being about the envy's price (with coupon) and it doesn't come with more than a standard screen so I might think about living a little and going to 15 inch (at least it's not 17 envy good lord I saw one of those in the msoft store that thing is massive).

I'm wondering if you run games lower than native resolution does it get real blurry (and most games will probably have to run lower than native because 1080p is crazy high and the card won't match it)? That's another mark in favor of getting a standard resolution screen.

switching is fine besides some older games but there is a way around it. if ur not going 1080p there is no point in u getting the envy 15 :p. u can play games at high settings with good framerates (30+). if u really want ultra.... then yeah u can reduce the res and its not bad. its been said many times better to get high res and reduce it in game vs getting a lower res

Trust me I'd love 1080p but there's going to be some games where it's just not smart to push it (battlefield 3) and still play well :)

bf3 should be able to run on high for 30+ which is fine for campaign for competative i guess u can reduce settings. as for sc2 it should be easily played at high at 1080p but i havent tried it yet

RTS's are CPU intensive. The graphics card, atleast on this unit, shouldn't be a problem. The i7-3610 will definitely ensure buttery sc2 gameplay, and the i5 default option probably won't do half bad either.

Cool. And what's your opinion of the graphic switching on it?

The graphics switching is a bit difficult to figure out, but once you set the right program to "high performance" you'll never have to worry about it again.

In the case of StarCraft 2 (which, by the way, maxes out beautifully at 40 fps on stock clocks), if you try to manually set it to high-performance you'll boost the SC2 launcher, not the program itself. The easiest way to find it is to start SC2, close SC2, and then find the .exe file on "recent programs" in the switchable graphics window.

You'll know if it doesn't work if you can't go higher than Medium settings.

EDIT: As an aside, it also remains very cool while maxing SC2.

I just played LA Noire for the first time, and it runs great at 1920x1080. It was very jittery until I closed the game, and opened the Catalyst software to set the game at "high performance." The laptop didn't get extremely hot, but the fan got VERY loud.
