Ok so as many of you guys, I am waiting for the envy 17 3d to arrive.

I was wondering what should I be doing once I got it, I did a little research and found that there are certain stress software to use to test if any malfunction is with the new laptop. Software I found like prime 95, 3d mark , etc etc.

Are those good to use or needed at all? And as to other components like screen , keyboard, etc etc what should i check? Just throwing out something to think about while I'm bored now :)

When I got my Envy 17, I stress tested with OCCT and Furmark. I first ran OCCT stress tests for everything besides the GPU. Then I ran Furmark to test the GPU. And then I ran OCCT and Furmark to stress everything and put a significant load on the power brick.

This was enough to prove to me that I did not receive defective hardware.

You can also test the monitor for the dead pixels cause they might be very unpleasant experience ;)

dikozh, I've been reading on a few threads about software testing your monitor for dead pixels. Can you or someone explain this matter. I mean, when I get a dead pixel its unavoidable, in your face. Why test for dead pixels?

Is it possible to have dead pixels that are unnoticeable? And if you can't see some dead pixels, do they have a chance to grow and get worse as some ulcers or wounds on a body that are not tended to? Lol, you see you made me think of some interesting ideas. I am serious though.... can dead pixels get worse?

I always thought if you can't see them, then they don't exist. At least they don't bother if you can't see them. Let me know, thanks.

Sometimes they're not so noticeable right away (b/c your eye just doesn't pick up on it), so you go and spend an afternoon wiping it clean, installing Windows and programs...then see it during the first movie you watch a week later.

If you have a dead pixel you WILL notice it eventually, so the point is just to find it right away so you can take care of it.
