Could you test Intel XTU?
(Download at http://downloadmirror.intel.com/21054/eng/XTU-Setup.msi)
Install it, and try seeing if you can change CPU turbo multipliers (ratios) and stuff.

3720 (as well as the standard 3820) cores are locked down. It appears that you CAN change the Turbo window (Default: 28sec) and play with the GPU parameters. I think I remember reading somewhere, that the previous 960 series is now just an 3820 which isn't locked

Have you actually tried it? I know those CPU's allow for a 400 mhz overclock over the standard turbo clocks. The AW and Clevo machines can do it. Whether or not this chipset will allow for it is another question. I have downloaded XTU, but I only have a 3610QM and therefore can only change the Turbo specs (times and wattage) and GPU. I assume, but cannot say for sure that since XTU works on this chipset that it will allow for an OC.
Personally I would not try it on this cooling system. Although it would be a ton of fun! -
"Have I actually tried it?"
Yes ... the sliders are grayed out.. Also, although the GPU controls appear to allow changes, they seem to be ignored. The turbo window is the only thing that seems to be able to be changed. I am reasonably sure the lockdown IS specific to the CPU chips, so I don't really understand any capability "the AW and Clevo" machines are doing... unless it is with an unlocked 3820 -
i had it dled but never got around to figuring it out. i just checked it and the sliders r greyed out like others said. but i think its still possible to change multipliers with other software (just not this). and this was on battery power so idk maybe plugging it in wil lmake a difference

Thanks Jerohm for trying it for us. It must be the chipset of the Envy then.
I contacted Mythlogic at one point (was considering a Clevo) and they confirmed that their P170EM would in fact allow for the overclock of the 3720QM and 3820QM. They said that ALL of the chips that they tried would overclock, but thought that sometime in the future Intel would lock them down (due to it not being a feature Intel supports).
If anyone considers buying a Clevo, I would get it from them. They are top notch. -
i have a 3820qm in an Asus G75VW. Intel XTU works fine. I can change whatever I want, but I think the core multipliers stop lower than the extreme edition. Still, That's enough to push you to 4.1GHz without changing the reference clock from its stock 100MHz
Being able to use intel XTU is about more than which CPU you have. It also has to work with whatever mother board is in your machine -
Mine is Alienware M17x R4 with 3820QM (QS version with same D2 stepping).
I am able to use XTU just like rmolina as well.
To those with 3720/3820QM...
