Hey, I posted this in the 8540w owner's thread but this might be an issue that other people could help with.
I want to be able to scroll with my pointing stick using the pointing stick middle button, but no matter what I set it at with the synaptics software it will only perform the action which the touchpad middle button is set at.
Am I missing some check box I need to uncheck, or something else that I am not seeing. I already tried updating the driver and uninstalling it and reinstalling it, and I tried it with the touchpad disabled, but nothing has worked. Any help? Thanks

I don't that that what you wish to do is possible. Both the middle buttons on the pointing stick and touch pad are the same button. There are just two of them that are identical. Both the touchpad and pointing sticks are the same pointing device so that's why you have two identical buttons.

Does that mean the synaptics utility is offering more customization than possible with the hardware? Because it lets me choose different functions for the pointer buttons and the touchpad buttons. And there is no setting for the touchpad buttons for scrolling with middle button pressed while there is that setting for the pointer middle button. Thanks for your help.

I know one issue I had with my 8530w is that, logically, the stick buttons were attached to the pad device. If the new EliteBooks let you hotkey-disable the touchpad while keeping the stick (and its buttons) active, then that's not the issue here.
Try this at the mouse control panel: hit alt-shift-i. Then make sure the stick buttons are really attached to the stick device. If they are, then it should just take some registry change to get stick scrolling enabled... I'll have to dig around for the key tomorrow some time. -
Hi, does anyone know how to get my pointing stick to actually work? I have tried all drivers that I can find (even if it doesn't specifically pertain to my OS (Win 7 Ultimate - even though Vista Business drivers will work most of the time) and can't seem to figure out how to get the pointing stick to work. The upper left and right pointing stick buttons work, but just not the stick itself. I have an HP NC6400.
Thanks. -
Nevermind...I figured it out. I pulled off the keyboard and re-seated the tiny ribbon cable that attaches the pointing stick to the motherboard, then then when I started up the computer it was functioning.
