I have a hp dv5-1007tx. This laptop has been overheating on me with gaming since pretty much the beginning and recently the fan has started to make alot of noise. So i opened it up to service a bit and thought i'd put some new paste in while i'm there.
Its my first time doing this but with the help of some youtube videos i got to where i needed. I bought some Arctic Cooling Mx-2, cleaned the fan and used it over the graphics and cpu areas.
I started reassembling (its a nightmare) and when i reached the keyboard i was having some trouble so i turned it on a few times to check it was in right. I have a password on power- on so i only ever loaded it there to make sure i could type. After a couple of times it stopped turining on and the power led only flashed. Tried it again and not even that was flashing..
I started going back then suddenly it started powering on again..then it didnt. So i figured i applied the paste wrong or something and reapplied, reassembled and now its not turning on at all.. The lightning led sometimes lights up if i connect it to a power source but as soon as i try turning it on that disappears.
Any help would be great here guys..

Sounds to me like some sort of connection. I wish I knew more about that laptop, but sadly I do not.
I know it would suck, but I would go back and start re-assembly and take your time to make sure everything is plugged in nice and tight. -
i made sure to follow a dissasembly guide backwards the second time round. So i'm pretty sure everything was ok..

No beeps whatsoever? It kinda sounds like ESD damage. Did you make sure to ground yourself? Try reassembling it again, and then before you put on the battery/PSU, hold the power button for a while. Also, check to see if you plugged in the BIOS battery. I think HP laptops have those and it won't turn on without it I think.

No beeps at all, no fan starting up etc. Only sometimes the power led flashes. I didnt really ground myself to be honest. Only maybe 3x during the whole thing.
I tried dissasembling again and about half way through i tried to turn it on and it worked..turned it off and on about 4x while it was pretty much in the same position then suddenly it stopped working again..??
I've dissasembled all the way now and its still not working.. it seems to work randomly for some reason??
EDIT: Another thing i noticed is that the led next to the power connector turns on when i plug it in but the led at the front of the laptop which usually lights up when its connected to a powersupply isnt lit up unless i have the battery in -
The thing is you should never turn on the laptop when it's even just partly disassembled, mate. That kinda makes you susceptible to ESD damage since the laptop will absorb a different charge than you.
I can't say for sure, but looks like your laptop's dead due to ESD damage. I'll be clear this time: Try disassembling, reassembling and doing the power on trick without any batteries/power cords attached. And NEVER turn on the laptop or plug it in while it's disassembled. Try to see if the static would clear up with that. -
did what you said.. the led at the front lights up now when i have it hooked up to the charger (but only when the battery is in?) but still no luck with it turning on. The first time i did it, the lights flashed but thats it.
Talked about it to a repair shop guy today and he was telling me this is a common fault with hp's and that its a graphics issue and that he's repaired many by some soldering technique.. he was charging $150 for repair and $250 to replace the motherboard! I have my doubts though bc i guess with it being a graphics issue atleast the fan should power on or the touch leds but i'm getting nothing...
Anyway I'm pretty much ready to give up and move on nowI dont think its worth taking out the cash to fix with the repair guy..

If it randomly decides to turn on sometimes and not others, it's almost guaranteedly ESD damage. I've had the same crap happen to an old phone of mine. It's also the same type of behavior when a device gets water damage but isn't completely dead but no longer useable.

what type of thermal paste did you use? If you used a metallic paste and got some on the board then you need to clean it up. I would see if you can get the service manual for your PC online and then dissassemble it, clean the paste up, apply new paste, and then reassemble it using the instructions provided by HP.
