I'm trying to troubleshoot a friend's dead HP Pavilion dv9339us notebook. It's only 19 months old, so I'm hoping it isn't a major hardware failure. :D

I'm hoping that the problem may be as simple as replacing the AC Adapter (fingers crossed). When I plug the adapter into a working wall outlet and connect it to the notebook, the system still won't power up or even make an attempt to boot. If I press and hold the Power button, the lighting bolt LED on the front edge blinks for a second or two. The response is the same whether the battery is installed or removed.

The 'brick' on the AC adapter remains very cool (normally gets a bit warm after a few minutes) and there's no buzzing or humming at all from it. I'm going to pick up a new one tomorrow morning and see if that does the trick. Just in case, I'm buying it at a store that allows returns.

Does anyone know if the flashing 'Lighting Bold' LED when I press the Power button is a good or bad sign?

    Any other ideas or suggestions?

    Thanks!

The adapter is getting warm even when the notebook is off? It kind of sounds like there is a short on the motherboard of the notebook...

When you just hit the button, as if you were trying to turn it on, is there a series of blinks that you could search online to try and decode the message?

I'm not sure what else I can help with, but perhaps an idea or two to get you started.

Greg I believe he said it stays cool, meaning it could be the battery died and so did the AC adapter, and now its not able to charge it (judging by the fact the laptop is not working on AC power). Or it could be some major issue..hopefully not...

Look for LED Diagnostic here . Select the Front edge tab then battery blinking from the simulation.

The battery led blinks when it's low on power.

-Is the power LED ON ?
-Is the circle ring at the DC jack blue when an ac adapter connected ?

If every LED I mention is on, the laptop has power but unable to turn on. It could be from power button board or power cable or a short on motherboard.

You can check power output of an AC adapter by a voltmetter in DC mode. One proble touches inside the connector, the other touches outside; it should have a volt reading such as 19 V if it's working.
