The new HP models logo light on the lid of the notebook can not be turned off. It is like a the power light. As long as you have the notebook turned on and the power wire connected internally, it is going to turn on. The only real way to turn it off would be to completely open the laptop and disconnect the wiring to that part of the LCD, but I would advise caution as you may mess with the wrong wire and affect your LCD output.

And why does it bother you? Surely when you're using your notebook, the lid is up and you can't see it. I know it looks a bit gay, but at least it's out of sight

I had the same question...when working in a dark room, i see it against my wall. My desk is against a wall and I can see the light behind it. I wish HP would let it dim after a while.

The same thing for the Multimedia buttons above the keyboard. I wish HP would allow us to dim it or automatically dim after a few seconds like the Dell XPS notebooks.

Do you guys think this could be solved througha BIOS update? Maybe we should all ask HP to consider this on their next BIOS update haha.

Well, not turn off. Just dim it a bit after a few seconds. Or just dim it permanently. Wish HP would give the options at least. Especially the other lights.

It does look great though...almost Macish.

I personally love it! But if it gets to you guys just put a piece of black electrical tape over it. The adhesive wont leave any resisdue when you take it off.

I don't mind the HP logo because I can't see it when I'm on the ltop.
But, I am bothered by the 3 LED's shing BRIGTHLY on the front left lip indicating power, charge, working.

When I use the ltop on my actual lap, the LED's bug me even more. They are very distracting in that use.
It would be great if they were adjustable via software, but a lot of manufacturers don't make their indicator lights adjustable.

I have a Dlink DIR655 router and the front blue LED's are pretty, but man they are freaking BRIGHT. I have it mounted so that the front of the unit faces down into the shelf it sits on. I wonder if those can be turned off? So far I haven't found a software/hardware way.
Someone suggested paint. I may try that on the front LED's.

For the logo, maybe you could get a piece of window tint and cut it to the logo shape. Get the percentage tint you'd like and it will effectively dim the logo.

a post it would look very DIY lol :p i think the electrical tape suggestion is the best coz the lid's black so it'll blend in. Disassembling the LCD's too risky and definately not worth it. good luck :D

I already disassembled my lid to reach the CPU fan (so I could apply ArcticSilver to the heat sinks). It's definitely a royal pain. Pulling the wire from the logo isn't a big deal after you've gotten that far though.

And yeah, I hate the lit logo and the lit touch-sensitive buttons. I thought the lit buttons were cool at first, but now they just annoy me. Wasting power, shining light in a bunch of directions besides any useful one (e.g., illuminating the *keyboard*). As if the thing didn't already have enough problems with short battery life, they drain off a few more hundreds of milliamps to keep those things lit. Stupid.

Christ, I've got a 15.4" display all lit up to tell me the silly thing is turned on. Why do I need a lit "power on" LED to tell me that? This thing also has an LED above the touchpad to indicate that it's on. Stupid again; anything that is on by default shouldn't be lit - you should only have indicators lit to tell you that something non-default has happened. (Like the capslock and numlock indicators.) I wish it were easy to have my own laptop design manufactured. I'd just have an LED for the charger and one for the HDD activity. And a switchable LED aimed at the keyboard...

I have an older HP ze4600 series, and yeah, it has 5 large bright blue lights at the top of the keyboard (for buttons I never used), a blue power button, bright blue wi-fi light, and large yellow leds for power/HD. The dv7 is classy in comparison, with it's tiny white-ice LEDs, and the HP logo on the lid is very cool.

exactly, the lights on the dv7 are subtle, not an in-ur-face type of thing. But anyways, i guess it depends on personal preference :) .

i don't know about tinted tape, but you can get lighting "gels" from production supply companies. You know, the lights they use to illuminate stages? it's plastic film that goes over those lights. and it comes in pretty much any color you can imagine. and then just tape it on with invisible scotch tape, or something similar. heck, you only need a 2 inch square piece. they'd probably just give it to you.

You cant turn it off im pretty sure it uses the light from the screen to light it up. Try dimming your screen if it dims then there you have it its the same light. ( Ill verify this later today when i get my dv7.

The HP light is separate from the LCD backlight... so adjusting the backlight intensity will not affect the logo's brightness...

here's why i hate the logo light
when i leave the laptop on at night, it lights up the entire room

    THAT, is annoying.
of course using it in a dark room is also quite annoying 'cause it reflects off the wall; my only solution so far is some sort of black modeling marker which can be rubbed off if needed
    covers the LED nicely

i know it's cool, but that doesn't justify the lack of an option to turn it off
maybe... there's a secret option in the BIOS

I just use a 4x neutral density flash gel to cover up the HP logo... you can get sample packs at photography stores practically for free (B&H Photo sells them for 1-2 cents)

I cut a piece enough to cover the logo and used a very small strip of double-sided tape to adhere it to case... looks very clean :D

... the HP logo is visible when it's on... but is not visible when it's off... :p

I don't know about the HP light, but on the Macbooks/Powerbooks etc, the lit Apple logo is actually the LCD backlight, shining through from the back. So if you turn off your LCD and the light also switches off, you know that its the same design.

Unfortunately... the HP logo is lit by a separate light source... so backlight intensity has no effect on the logo brightness... :(

i guess i'm a little confused here. what is it, that you all are doing with your laptops, that the light is annoying you? is it sitting on your nightstand while you're trying to sleep or something, and left on? if it's open, isn't the brightness of the screen more overpowering than that HP logo light?

well for me my work desk is in my bedroom
so when i leave the laptop on at night (with the lid closed so the LCD screen is off), the logo is visible and lights up the room

this "4x neutral density flash gel" sounds good so far

I have it placed on my desk in my bedroom... I leave my machine on so when I close the cover, the HP logo stays lit and projects the light onto the back wall and the ceiling...

I like sleeping in a pitch black room... that lit HP logo is like having a night light in the room :p

Not as bad as Xythil though... can't believe he was annoyed at those 3 dimly lit LED indicators in the front of the notebook

Those 3 dimly lit indicators are annoying at night. They give quite a bit of light placed in the dark room, at least my hdx16t does. Very annoying.

Gateway has a Fn+F4 or so button to turn all lights "OFF" "DIM" and "ON". Wish HP had that too. :(

Can't you put it in hibernate or something if you don't want to turn it off? Normally I'd think that would close off all useless lights.

But umm yeah, I guess it can get somewhat annoying if you're in a dark room and there's this random light shining at the back of the laptop lol :p

Also, the light does eat battery power I"m guessing, even fi it's minimal, it still reduces battery life I guess... >.>

I have a HP DV4, and the light turns off when I close the lid and put it into sleep mode.

I must admit that the light on the front cover is annoying, and I would like some way to turn it off and save the power (Perferrably a software method).

Maybe we could all email HP about the "issue". It is a problem, especially when people leave the notebook on at night and see this light on the back! I like it, but not that much...it gets annoying after a while...

Especially the 3 LEDs in the front and the quicktouch buttons above the keyboard....

Dell XPS turns it off autmatically after a few seconds...why couldn't HP think of that practicallity especially if it's being touted as a "multimedia" notebook! People watch movies on these things! It's irritating to see these bright lights in a dark room...am I right or am I right?

My guess is, HP could easily fix it through a BIOS patch...

That doesn't bother me as much as the decision to put the capslock LED to the side of the capslock key, so you can't see whether you've turned it on or off when typing and looking at the screen!

lol, probably at a cost if it had the HP logo on it too ;)

This is a double-edged sword. On the one hand its nice to see them in the dark so you know what you're touching, which is unlike my XPS M1330 which was totally dark and you couldn't know what you're touching. Don't want to Eject when you only mean to Pause!

Obviously they should have made the LEDs off by default, only lighting up on first touch. Problem solved. But they clearly didn't think through any of these design elements before building them.

Yeah i suppose, but I don't really use the quicktouch buttons. They don't work with my video player which is VLC and they have the erratic volume slider problem. However, I see where you're coming from.

I would also like to see some way to disable the HP logo on the screen. When in a meeting and you have it on the table its distracting to see this logo lit up. Presentations in a dark room makes it stand out and I dont need a constant "Look at me!!! Im like a mac :) I have a lit logo on my lid!!!!!! im so coooool." light.

I never thought about the caps lock led before. Your right it IS in a stupid spot.

And do we really need a led for EVERYTHING??? Do I really need a white led to tell me the touch pad is on? why not just light the dam thing red when its off?
