I used to be able to on my old laptop turn down the brightness of the screen until it was off. This was us full if I just wanted to listen to sound at night and without the screen burning into the walls or if I was running it through another monitor to play movies I could turn the main screen off so it did not distract. Unfortunately on my new Presario C731 I can only turn down the brightness a few steps. Is there a way around this?

    Thanks

I doubt there is, if the brightness goes down, it looks like its working but not as much as you expected.
You can always close the lid or put a screensaver after a minute

On most computers, the lowest brightness setting turns the backlight off. You can still see the desktop, but it's very faint.
