Quick question about warranty on HHDs. I have a bad Hitachi HDD in my 2 year old DV8000 laptop. Its definately dead. As soon as it warms up it makes loud noises and the laptop freezes....luckily its the second D hard drive. So I took it out. All is fine now, less one HDD.
Now the drive would have a 3 year, or is it 5 year warranty if I bought it retail, but only one year since it was in the laptop from HP?
Is there anything I can do to have it replaced? like can HP replace it thru Hitachi? or am I pushing my luck?!
The sick thing is- being that the D drive was not used much, stored music and photos and tell you the truth I never played any of the music on the laptop anyhow. Had it been installed as the C drive it might have gone bad within warranty then.

If you bought the HDD aftermarket and not directly through HP, they won't do anything for you.

The only way you are going to get it replaced (the warranty should be longer than 2 years) is to go through Hitachi.

The hard drive came installed in the laptop 2 years ago. The laptop has two hard drives. (17")

    Thanks for the link.
    It just says
Please return drive to the point of purchase or system manufacturer.

I had contacted HP support via email. Reading through all the HP nightmares here I was hoping this might be quick and painless.

Is your laptop still under warranty? If it is then HP will replace the HDD. Most likely they will send you the HDD, have you replace it, and then send back the defective HDD.

Nope, not under warranty. It had the one year warranty.

    SOL I guess :(

Just hoping they would throw a HDD in the mail I guess. Retail drives have longer warranties. I was thinking that they'd be able to send my broken one back to Hitachi then.....I don't know what length warranty Hitachi give HP.

You should be able to go through Hitachi then and get a new HDD. Just because your warranty is done through HP, doesn't mean the warranty of an individual product in the laptop isn't covered under the manufacturer's warranty.

Give Hitachi and call and find out, it's worth your time if there is a possibility that you'll get it replaced.

I think I'll give Hitachi a call later. Working now.

Hitachi sells drives to HP at a discount because HP handles warranty support. They (and every other HD manufacturer) will only help you if you bought your drive at retail (Newegg, Best Buy, etc, bare drive or boxed).

Since you can replace the drive for less than HP's extended warranty would have cost and get the latest and greatest model to boot, consider this a good excuse to upgrade drives :D.

OEM drives typically have only a 1 year warranty.

...and I'm hoping people will start to send me money for no reason.

Dang, neither HP nor Hitachi would just mail me a brand new HDD ...Ha ha

To be honest I didn't really expect that.

I heard back from HP and Hitachi and the one year warranty stands.

I am getting a *cough couch* one from ebay. Its just a second HDD.
