sounds great! So is this suppose to work on all HP laptops with touchpad? Even for the Envy line? Sorry if I sound naive about it, since I mostly plug my mouse and have the touchpad disabled. Love the mouse since it feels like I'm using a desktop, but portable! hahha best of both worlds.

By the way, I've linked this thread to users having issues with the touchpad.

    KJ

hey machater, if you prefer VS2010, i basically rewrote two finger scroll in VS2010 as a managed C++ app in windows forms a few months ago that you could use or develop. personally i didn't like c++ builder so i ditched it and the original two-finger-scroll project is pretty old.

its only been tested on envy 14s, but i see no reason why it wouldn't work on other multitouch synaptics clickpads or whatever they're called.

i don't want to hijack your thread so i tried to pm you but you have it disabled. let me know if you're interested.

If the original two-finger-scroll program worked on the Envy, this one will too.

It's basically a bug fix of the original one, and a few new tweaks on top of it.

In the first post. There's a link to my original post on the sister web site TabletPCReview, which has the download link.

I've tested on my HP TM2, which has the same kind of Clickpad/Touchpad as the Envy line, so there's no reason why it wouldn't work on an Envy.

It's important that dragging files (physical-click and drag with another finger, or double tap and drag) now works properly unlike with the original Synaptics' implementation or with the original two-finger-scroll.

The fix works for both left and right click dragging.

As for private messages, I'm not sure why it's disabled on here. It works on TabletPCReview.

Probably due to my low post count here.

Hey guys, I'm pushing out a new version tomorrow with an awesome new feature (popularly requested):

... You've guessed it! SMOOTH Horizontal scrolling! And now it feels... like a ... Mac. Move around a web page with horizontal and vertical scrollbars now more naturally with two fingers on the touchpad.

I'm putting some "final touches" on it, but otherwise it completely works as it is.

Need to go to bed now, tired :\

I loaded the .7 version and when I used my left click on the pad my pointer would jump away. I had to unload it , it was driving me nuts.

Could you describe exactly how you left-clicked?

Like, how many fingers were on the touchpad at the time prior to the click, etc.

And did you disable Synaptics' "MultiTouch Gestures" in the control panel yet?

You should, or Synaptics' software may randomly try to zoom, scroll, etc while you're trying to use two finger scroll.

Not directly, yet. But you can use edge scrolling (continue scrolling when fingers on edge), which essentially does the same thing.

MacHater.... THANK YOU so much for this program.
One of the things I liked about my mac was the "smooth" 2 finger scroll... But there was NO windows pc trackpads that were even close.... UNTIL NOW, so far your program is working great!!!

Hey MacHater, I was wondering if this worked for laptops with regular Synaptics touchpads? I have a Compaq CQ60-220US and couldn't get it to work with the Synaptics driver. I tried by disabling multifinger gestures in Synaptics and leaving your software open, and I couldn't scroll. Maybe I'm just doing something wrong?

MacHater, awesome work. Simple two-finger scroll and two-finger tap for right-click are key. Three-finger for middle-click even works most of the time.

Some Synaptics setting tips for others:
    • I found reassigning the actual hardware left-button action to be a middle-click was useful.
    • All checkboxes under scrolling are off.
    • I left pinch-zoom on, but you can tell there's a little software disagreement with what should happen at times, so I don't us it much. (I get more control with Ctrl + "two finger scroll" for zoom anyway.)
    • Tapping, Tap again and hold, and Locking Drags are all on...since I like that feature.

Synaptics control panel has two-finger scrolling (with coasting!), which I was using, but MacHater's build has support for two- and three-finger taps.

I miss the Synaptics coasting a little bit. I hoped the "Keep scolling on edges" would work for me, but I found that option was pretty irritating. The edge scrolling was pretty slow. More importantly, once my fingers reached an "edge" I had to lift my fingers up and put them back down to scroll back the other way. The edge regions are unforgiving gutters of a bowling lane. Much more enjoyable after turning it off.

Finally, the system tray app works fine, except if you need use an app as an administrator (e.g., Visual Studio), the super sweet features (e.g., two-finger tap right-click) don't work. If you run Two Finger Scroll as an administrator also, then they are available; however, the checkbox to run the app at startup doesn't work any more. Maybe there's a good solution for this?

EDIT: Found a way to automatically run it with elevated privileges by scheduling a task to do it.

Yep, surely enough there were about 8 different icons for it because I had clicked it so many times :p

New problem though: Whenever I put my computer to sleep, upon resumption the two finger scroll doesn't work anymore. Solution?

I'm really liking this mod, and use it to A)enable two-finger right clicking, B)make three-finger tapping do something other than open a program, and C)reduce two-finger scrolling to a sane speed.

Right now it seems to create two issues when in use:
    1) With the stock driver, you can change the "active area" of the touchpad. This is extremely useful for turning the "buttons" on the clickiepad into real buttons and prevent accidental scrolling, clicking, etc from the button areas. Unfortunately, the two-finger clicking enabled by this nifty mod is triggered by the button areas still, causing errant contextual menus when I'm keeping a finger at the ready on the button while doing something else on the trackpad. Would it be possible to add an option or toggle to disable contextual input from the button areas of the trackpad? (Or have a draggable "input area" box like the stock driver?)

    2) TwoFingerScroll seems to kill "EdgeMotion" functionality (or I've screwed up its settings).

Thanks again for making the touchpad usable! You rock!

I am loving this program, having the ability to double tap for right click is a savour!

One request for the dev though, any chance of implementing something similar to coasting that is an option in the synaptics settings. I have come to rely on that and am missing it quite a bit.

    Otherwise great work!

Did you try to enable and disable horizontal and vertical scrolling using the conventional method, through the Mouse Control Panel? Open the Mouse Control Panel, then go to the Device Settings tab, and select the "Settings..." button. This should open a new window, which has options to enable and disable the different types of scrolling available.

How do I download the latest version? The link in your first post goes to the TabletPC Review page but I just get a header and logo on a blank page. If I go to your Project Homepage, I only see up to v1.0.6. there. How do I get v1.0.8? Is the problem with my IE8 browser?

@MacHater: are you planning to publish the source code for this mod? I'd love to add and share a couple of features and fix a few bugs I've come across:

    - feature: option to invert scrolling direction
    - feature: edge motion for two-finger scrolling
    - feature: scrolling decceleration / inertial scrolling
    - bugfix: behavior of diagonal scrolling with acceleration enabled
    - bugfix: scrolling can stop when changing direction quickly (instead of moving towards the other direction).

It would be great if I could start from your up-to-date version rather than the old v1.0.6 from google code. The less duplication the better!

Fantastic! Thanks for this. Coming from a macbook pro, the touchpad on my HP dv7 was giving me fits, even with the latest synaptics drivers, until I unstalled this wonderful utility. Now I have 2 finger scrolling working like it's supposed to.

I just downloaded version 1.08 and horizontal scrolling works ok for me (Win7 64 with Synaptics' features disabled) The keep scrolling on edge feature does not though.

I was directed here from a member of HPs customer service forum. 2FingerScroll is much better than the Synaptics driver. It was unbearably uncontrollable and eratic to me. I miss a few things though; Pinch zoom, and an option to remove the icon from the taskbar (OCD,it was a tough decision to leave battery and wifi next to the clock) Another small issue is I can't disable the top corners (to turn off touchpad, etc) without Synaptics software running, which buggers everything up.

I don't know why the Synaptics features have to function so poorly. They have all the nice features, but must have monkeys writing the code. I'd pay $ for the features of Synaptics Touchpad Enhancements but the quality of MacHater's 2FingerScroll

Any way of getting horizontal scroll work on Win XP?
At the same laptop under windows 7 the utility work flawlessly, but under XP there's no reaction to the horizontal movement.

I've read a lot about "Reil's" touchpad app on these forums...
Are these 2 apps similar? Is there an advantage to one over the other?

I own an HP dv6tqe by the way

Fantastic tool mate, thanks a lot! Using it on my Dell XPS 17, the DELL and synaptics drivers are just fubar

Two finger scrolling is behaving over sensitive though, sometimes it speeds up/down like crazy even when im just swiping slowly/lightly. Turning down speed makes the scrolling slover shortly but this "full speed scrolling" still happens after a few seconds, resulting in the page jumping down at full speed.

Do I have to uninstall the synaptics driver or do I just run yout tool along with it?
am on win7 64 with the latest synaptics driver on a DELL. Thanks for you help, will donate fo shizzle!

Edit: Never mind, I just deactivated multigestures in synaptics and now I am simply amazed by the result :) Have a beer on me! Plus, I will spread the word, I think many are frustrated by those -poor drivers and never heard of your great tool.

Kinda lame that some guy at home has to make proper drivers for synaptics/Dell -.-

Still wondering whether to uninstall de synaptics drivers or just deactivate all the multigesture features?
