Lately the USB port on my e14 beats edition does not work properly. Some times I have to reboot multiple times for my USB to recognize anything such as my ipod or my USB HDD. I have also noticed that when I tried to shut down my computer, it will just stick on the shutdown screen and will not shut down properly unless I hold the power button. Any suggestions? Is it hardware or OS problem?

    Likely hardware.

    To possibly rule out OS, go to device manager. Under section title Universal Serial Bus controllers;

Uninstall all USB root hubs and composite device drivers by right clicking each and hitting uninstall. Reboot when done. This will refresh each of the drivers.

You may need to reboot more than once.

Thanks for the advice. I will try that later today.

But what I noticed about the shutdown issue is that I had to manually select the switchable display and then it will shutdown properly. After it have shut down properly, my usb device seem to be working normally now but I haven't had the chance to play with it too much yet.

    hmmmm.

I'm getting a different issue. USB seems to shut off for like 3 seconds sometimes (I know it happens since I see my mouse's lights turn off for a few seconds).

guess I'll try uninstalling all those root hubs and stuff.

edit: may be jumping the gun but so far I haven't had this issue after turning "lan power savings" back on in the bios. It started a bit after I updated to f.13 and then turned that off to test something for someone else, I think.

'course I'll wait a few days for it to happen again (power to flick off on the mouse) before I say it's fixed.

edit the edit: nope. not fixed. happened when I added something to the white list in noscript that involved some flash.

    ..*shrugs*

As of now, I have restored the computer to its original state and everything (the USB and shutdown) seem to be working properly so far. Could it be one of the windows update that messed things up?

    possibly.

coulda been windows update. coulda been some random drivers update. coulda been some program that installed silently that was breaking things or some other conflict.

if it starts happening again, see what all you installed/did on that day and try to figure it out. otherwise well, glad to see it's working fine again.

So my usb issue is still bugging me. My mouse keeps going out.

Though it could just be the mouse 'cause the cord is kinda messed up. need to buy another one and see if it still happens.

Definitely sounds like a software problem to me. The problems shutting down are the biggest indication.

I know you already reinstalled to the factory configuration, but if you can borrow someone's Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit disc (or find an ISO copy), consider doing a fresh reinstall. It solves a LOT of issues, specifically the junk HP bundled software.
