My fan is constantly running without doing anything. I have HP DV6T with Ubuntu 11.10.

And when it's a new install, which graphics is Ubuntu using?

Out of the box the Intel card is active, and the Radeon is running full power doing nothing. Check this out and you can decent battery, no fans and your Radeon card :)

installed mint on a partition, tried to get the drivers to work, no dice. went ahead with Ubuntu and did everything as told, and the ATI drivers installed. Set the intel card as active to reduce heat and power usage, rebooted, and now I can't boot into ubuntu. i get lines of text with ok and then a fail. tried reinstalling lightdm and it didn't fix it.
