I was sitting at my dining room table with my one week old laptop (dv9700t) when the light above went out. I have one of these big light fixtures with a heavy metal screw type thing. I stood on my chair and starting to take the light fixture off when the heavy metal screw slipped and fell on my laptop. It made a hard thumping noise to the left of the finger pad.![]()
I took a look at the laptop and other than a little scratch it seemed fine. I replaced the light and went back to work. However, when I went back to work I tried to do something and the whole thing just locked up on me. I turned the laptop off and restarted and it wouldn't boot into Windows. So I ran the hard disk check in the bios and it said I needed to replace the primary hard disk. My heart sank and I had the aching feeling in the pit of my gut.![]()
So I called up HP and told them what happened and that I have the 1 year accidental plan. Talked to a lady and she said they'd ship out a new hard drive and recovery disks. (Because some idiot forgot to make them....)
I got the emails about the ordered new parts and when I looked at the one for the hard drive it says it's 5400 RPM, but it's supposed to be the 7200 RPM. So back to calling HP. The guy I talked to said he had sent an email to a supervisor to straighten this out and I should get a call or an email on Monday from them. So I think all will be well.....I hope. My replacement hard drive should be here no later than Thursday.
Wish me luck that I get the correct hard drive. Thanks for letting me vent a little.
The moral of the story; move your notebook out of the way!

Wow must of been a very heavy screw lol
-
Good thing you got accidental warranty,
-
The screw must of been huge. made the hit loosened up a Ram or something
-
-
Ahh sucks for you. But your real lucky you have Accidental.
-
Hard to believe a screw would do that much damage, it should be able to handle more torture than that.
It must have hit the exact time the HD was spinning up to cause such failure. Im guessing youve tried reseating the HD's cables -
-
So you were fixing a heavy light fixture with the laptop underneath it? How careless. I usually take expensive stuff out of the way before I fix something. Lesson learned.
-
Ill have to remember not to fix lights over my dv9700t when i get it. Well, at least you have the Accedental Warranty. Ive always had good luck with HP support.
-
Even if he didnt have accidental warranty, the standard warranty could have covered it. Theres no way of them finding out, unless the scratch your talking about is really noticable.
HD failure is pretty common aswell so hp will probably consider it as a defective item and replace it under standard warranty -
Even if he didnt have accidental warranty, the standard warranty could have covered it. Theres no way of them finding out, unless the scratch your talking about is a massive crack. The guy from the store i bought my lappy off actually told me alot of people get away with it.

And yes lesson learned. I was up there and I looked down and thought, "I should move that. Naw, I got this."
Never again. I'm just glad I got this out of the way early so I don't make this mistake while something really important was on the laptop. -
I guess I heard that many times from my wife too! LOL I was going to suggest to replace the drive yourself but then again something else might be wrong with it.
-
Well, they never called me or sent me an email on Monday (big surprise). So I called them up again. The guy I talked to got "authorization" to cancel the 5400 RPM drive and put in a new order to send me the correct 7200 RPM drive. So that's taken care of. However, my wife called me at work today and said I rec'd a package from HP. She opened it up for me and its a hard drive! I figure it's the wrong one and they just didn't cancel the previous order on time. I'll probably get the correct one tomorrow, hopefully I'll get the recovery discs as well as I don't have those.
But it begs the question....If HP cancelled the order of the 5400 RPM drive yet sent me one anyway.....would I be able to keep it? Naw, I can't do that. I'll send it back. I don't need anymore bad karma. -
Id wait and see if they still send you the 7200rpm.. did your wife have to sign something to recieve it? Most likely a clerical error.
Free hard drive! Id definately keep it unless they ask for it back -
For sure, unless they ask for it back, keep it. Why not.
-
Kanehi - that wasn't very sensitive - I'm sure we've all done something like that - I know I have for sure.
But I'm surpised no one went for the cheap one liner ...
You could say that notebook got "screwed" - get it!!! HA! HA! HA!
Come on - a bad joke is necessary in the worst of times!
Your computer will be fine, dude. -
. Nice one liner.
-
Hmmm......my wife says she didn't have to sign for anything. In fact the Fed-Ex guy didn't even knock on the door! He just tossed the package on our front steps. Maybe I'll hold onto it until HP asks for it back.
And yes my laptop got "screwed". LOL! Why didn't I think of that. -
-
Think of the hard drive as compensation, its their mistake they send the wrong hard drive anyway.
Id say i never recieved it, if you didnt have to sign for anything since they have no proof you recieved it. FedEx would be blamed for their carelessness -
Hi five!
Wana send it my way, eh? -
Do you really want to keep the drive even though it's wrong to do so?
Sensitive? Are we not men! ho ho ho. LOL. -
Okay, okay - sorry - sensitive wasn't the word ... judgemental .. does that have more testosterone in it?
Or if you prefer - Biblical - like "Let he who has not done something stupid throw the first stone!" -
Judgemental? Not at all, more like common sense. I don't ask for directions either, I rather drive around lost than having my pride hurt! LOL Thank god for GPS! But I have one with a woman's voice and it feels like it's a back seat driver telling me where to go. Can't win!

Oh man! HP customer service has me pi**ed off right now. I was just on hold for 30 minutes just to talk to someone as I didn't get my new drive or the recovery discs as I was supposed to today. After going through the hoops someone finally tells me what's going on. I guess when you are sent a hard drive they automatically send you recovery discs. Since the 5400 RPM drive (the wrong one) was sent without recovery discs, because the order was canceled, they now want to charge me $22.54 for new ones. I had to be 'escalated' to a Case Manager who is supposed to call me tomorrow (yeah right). All this because they screwed up in the first place with my replacement hard drive. How hard can it be to send out recovery discs and the correct hard drive? And now they want to charge me?! I don't think so.
This is why I got the accidental warranty, I didn't know I would have to fight tooth and nail to get what I'm supposed to get. I'm still within my 21 days to return this notebook to them. I may do that if I can't get some damn help. -
Welcome to the wonderful world of customer service! I long for the days when you got mantle clock or a new toaster when opening a bank account (you know, before I was born). Now, you PAY extra for accident protection and they still screw you.
-
I just rec'd the Recovery Discs yesterday! I still have not rec'd my 7200 RPM drive. They will be getting a call from me later today and I will NOT be happy. My wife called me at work this morning and let me know that HP FINALLY called today. But they wanted to know about the Recovery Discs. Screw the discs. I already did a clean install of Vista x64 on the other hard drive.
Don't get me wrong, I love my new laptop. It's even better than what I expected it to be, but if this is what HP calls customer service then they've got a lot to learn. -
People do fall thru the cracks and that's why you have to be persistent but not abusive. People tend to turn you off when your voice reaches a certain pitch close to being a nuisance and all they hear is yada yada yada. Be specific and to the point and not add negative comments. Watch that blood pressure and stay calm. Take notes..dates, names, numbers, etc.
-
I find it the other way..
I find people doing their jobs correctly when they are threatened and fear the sound of my voice. This is possible while still being in a proffessional manner which really gets the job done quicker. You cant actually legally threaten HP, mostly cause they probably have 200 lawyers on retainer.
I learnt the customer service policys. They can only hang up if the client is being abusive and unprofessional (direct threats and swearing like a maniac). Under law you have the right to speak to their supervisor to make complaints or merits.
Uh-oh.....I messed up
