Hi,
I'm having an issue with the sound on my new DV5.
I can record via the mic, using something like the inbuilt Sound Recorder software, and the saved file contains the correct recording. However I'm not able to monitor that sound via the speakers (or headphones or external speakers).
As I'm hoping to use the laptop for music making this is a big issue - for example plugging a synth into the mic socket means that I can record the synth, but can't actually hear what I'm playing during the recording.
I've tried using a couple of professional audio applications but it's the same issue - there's no ability to monitor the input audio.
The mic socket works - as it's recording. And the hardware is able to monitor the sound - as I have heard a burst of the input sound occasionally when accessing help files or software settings when in the applications.
It sounds like a software glitch...or do you think this could be duff hardware? I don't have this problem on my desktop XP machine.
Thanks for reading.

Got a new problem now - the media strip volume control has gone haywire, won't switch off and stays on screen, and when I try and open the volume control via the bottom icon nothing happens.
Excellent. I've read that HP software was crap, but this is my first experience of this.
Not sure what to do about this, whether it's something I can fix, put up with occasionally, or whether it's time to get a refund. I can't live without the sound monitoring thing though, so if I can't work that out it'll definitely be going back.
I could do without this really - after all the hassles I had with my Macbook Pro, which I sent back a couple of weeks ago.
Can anyone recommend a laptop that actually works? -
This is a known issue, try cleaning the panel where the volume control is using a non abrasive cleaner (I used lcd cleaning solution and a microfibre cloth)....I did not have this issue but if you google hp dv5 crackling you get a few responses...
I am actually have a sound issue as well (this is why I found out all these things about this laptop), my sound plays fine but I get some small cracks in the sound, I am trying to track it down, disable wifi tweaked with settings, but I'm thinking this has to do with the hard drive.....
I am not sure what to do, Im no noobie when it comes to computers I build machines all the time but laptops not soo...I'd like to give Windows Vista Ultimate 32bit or even 64bit a try instead of the home premium on the machine now and start clean without all the HP crap installed....or call hp support and try to explain to them the issue...
ahh sorry for the hijack...Hope I answered your questions and your issues get resolved, also note there is a firmware update for that top quick control units which you should look at as well....
My unit is the DV5-1174ca -
Do you have the link to the update?
I've noticed the crackling sound as well.
It's disappointing as overall it's a good machine. I'd like to get the HP rubbish off as well, so I'll reinstall the OS at some point. Still waiting for a back up disk though as I can't back up from the hard drive on this one. -
Fixed my audio crackling issue by going to the DV5T updates thread, loading new chipset driver, newest audio driver, new video driver (I used drivers off another page more recent modified ones), the touchpad software was updated... I would just update all the drivers.
