We can't really help you much unless we know what you are going to use the computer for (neither is all that good for gaming, for example).

With no knowledge whatsover, I'd say go with the 8000z. It has a mobile processor (the Turion) instead of a desktop processor. My personal prejudice is that a desktop processor should never be in a notebook unless it is an engineer's or programmer's number cruncher and that engineer/programmer HAS to have a notebook. Desktop processors belong in desktop systems. They need more space for heat sinks and larger cases so there is more air to cool those heat sinks.

Thanks for your reply. I am not a gamer. The main use will be using MS Office applications, mainly MS Word and MS Excel, some powerpoint. Also for Internet use (browsing, emailing etc.), storing files (pictures, MP3s, etc) and watching DVDs.

The ZV6270us refurbished and the price is approx US$ 1060, while the DV8110US is new and the price is approx US$1260 (both including shipping).

I am willing to spend the extra $200 if it is worth it.

I like the idea of the 17" screen in the DV8110US. I see that both have dedicated video of 128 MB and while the ZV6270US has 1GB RAM the DV8110US has 512 GB RAM. The DV8110US has a 80 GB HD (5400 rpm) while the ZV6270 has a 100 GB HD (4200 rpm).

zv6000 is a great computer and runs very cool. I think it will run cooler than dv8000. The GPU of both laptops is the same - low end; yet it will do OK with moderate gaming. The DV8000 has a faster HDD which is a big PLUS for it because this is where laptop performance usually lags .
I personally don't like the idea of 17'' laptop because it is huge. I have a zv6000 and really like it but it is also on the heavy side - 7-8 lb.
If you think the bigger screen is worth the money -DVDs, Power Point- (it comes with higher resolution, which is really nice btw) then get the DV8000; besides it has a nice power efficient processor.
I think you can get a better deal for it at HP Shopping!

I too have a zv6000 and love it. It does run very cool even though it does have a desktop processor. This is probably because it has 2 fans. I'm not sure if the dv8000 has 1 or 2 fans but Turions seem to actually run hotter than the Athlon processors in comparison I see. Again, I think this is because of the difference in number of fans, however. Anyway, I second that the 5400 hard drive offers better performance than the 4200. Also, you need to decide if you want a 17" or 15.4" screen. Personally, for me the 15.4" screen offers plenty of real estate. Also, as Vassi 98 said you may want to look at HPshopping.com and see if you can get a better deal on these laptops there. Lastly, I would also recommend taking a look at the Compaq R4000 model. It is the twin of the zv6000. The only real difference is that the exterior looks different and they are usually somewhat less expensive. Anyway, Good luck and happy computing!

    Thanks for all the advice!

BTW, does the ZV6270US model has the Quick Play feature?

I'd get the dv8000z. Almost the same weight as the zv6000, smaller power brick, cooler running CPU, the 5400RPM HD is a VERY noticible improvement over a 4200RPM HD, RAM is very easy to upgrade later, and the faster CPU in the zv6000 won't buy you much for your applications but the dv8000z's larger screen will help.

It wouldn't hurt to check the cost of a build-to-order dv8000z on hp.com but retail models are usually cheaper, especially when they have those annoying rebates. Check out the dv5000z while you're at it.

No, it does not. Not sure if the dv8000 does.
