I have a question on using a Universal Charger on the HP laptop. The laptop I am using is the HP HDX16t. I have used both the Kensington 33197 and the Targus APM69US chargers with the recommended tip for this laptop. In both cases, the laptop charges just fine.
However, there is a light right next to the charger plug. If I use the HP charger than came with the laptop, the light turns on and a chime sounds. However, with the two universal chargers, the light does not turn on and the chime does not sound. But the laptop charges just fine. I am curious about this behavior. How does HP know that it is not an HP charger that I am using?

I have seen this exact behavior on the HP dv5t laptop.

I have metered voltages on the chargers, on many laptop chargers, and found some that the center pin is a small male and has 2 sleeves. The center pin is a lower voltage. Maybe it is for that function. The outer sleeve is negative, and the inner sleeve has the 19.5 volts on it. Not sure if that is the plug on your charger.

If that is the case, it is just a bells and whistle thingie. If it charges the battery and will run in it, and the VOLTAGE IS CORRECT and at least the rated amps on the back sticker on the laptop, you should be fine.
