I talked to an HP support rep (1-866-408-5408) today about my main issues with my Envy 14:
Samsung 256 GB SSD
He received information from engineering that the SSD does support idle-time garbage collection, confirming what htwingnut found yesterday. He also said that the OEM SSD wouldn't necessarily be compatible with the manufacturer firmware update from Samsung. He didn't speculate on whether or not HP was working on an update. This answer is good enough for me.
Fan and CPU Whine
The fan and whine issues are a known issue with the CPU fan assembly. I didn't ask how many units were affected or what time frame for the build date might have been affected.
The end result for me is that I'll be sending mine in for repair as soon as I get the shipping box. I'm perfectly happy with this solution since the laptop (other than the finicky trackpad) is just fine. This is a bit of an inconvenience, but at least HP is taking steps to fix it. I wouldn't want to risk getting a completely new machine that might have other problems.
I really have to credit Ryan (the support rep) for being understanding and resourceful. Thanks, HP!

I can confirm that the VBM1C91Q found here:
Samsung SSD - Downloads
does not work with the Samsung SSD. I tried it and just said it didn't recognize my drive.
If I didn't receive a TRIM enabled drive as a replacement, I was going to try out the procedure noted here:
http://forum.notebookreview.com/ali...ers-samsung-pm800-ssd-trim-now-available.html
And if I bricked the drive, well its going back to HP anyhow. But that may be an avenue for others if it DOES work. However I am hearing the newer drives have changes to the controller that it could brick the drive. Normally I don't condone doing this, but since HP seems pretty useless with helping, someone has to do something to figure this out.
The fact that there is a known firmware that supports TRIM is helpful. It's only twisting HP's arm to give us the firmware and a utility to update it to the new firmware. -
tornbacchus GO leafs.. Wait, Nevermid
I also talked to an hp rep and he also said it was the cpu fan.
I will be sending mine in today or tomorrow for a cpu fan replacement to fix the whine. -
So HP is fixing CPU whine now? Is there a link for this or something?
-
No link. Call support, tell them you're experiencing CPU whine. The rep I spoke to said it was a known issue and suggested to send it in for repair.

A thread for... everything...

My apologies. I figured that it's hard for newbies like me to sort through the 100s of pages in the owner thread. Is that where this belongs?
-
I re-quoted you in the 2 threads that this belongs in. CPU whine poll thread and Samsung SSD thread.
Closing this thread.
