So I made my way down to Fry's today. The tech tried his own USB device and I showed mine too. He confirmed the problem. He ran a little diagnostic CD that showed that the system had NO USB ports. So off the system goes to HP!

Not bad. However, all is not perfect ;) What happened you ask? Well, he said the average turn around time is 4 to 8 weeks!

Thats not too bad because I get a loaner. Of course, the loaner has Windows Vista Home Premium on it, so one could argue that using an XP based machine with malfunctioning USB ports might be better than using Vista.

But anyway, I get HP dv6215us "open box" as a loaner. We test it out in the store and it works (if you can say that about Vista). But alas, theres one thing we didn't try in the store! Can you guess what it is? I didn't open the DVD drive while I was in the store. So I'm at home a few hours later and decide it's time to set up my "loaner". I plug it in and turn it on. I hear a disc spin up and think "odd, I didn't put a disc in there" (too loud in the store to hear it). I press the button to open the tray.... nothing happens. I press it 5 more times. Nothing happens. The tray is malfunctioning! Nice! So I return one defective computer to get another.

So off this one goes and another "loaner" back in its place. Great fun, isn't it?

Anyway, I'm not upset. Why? Because I decided it was finally time to get a computer that actually worked. I'm typing this from my brand spanking new MacBook :D I honestly haven't been so satisfied or happy with a computer since I got my very first one so long ago.
