So I'm thinking of updating my processor because it's only at 2.0Ghz.

I find it annoying that first they don't do custom builts on the UK HP website and secondly the only way you can get the higher graphics options on a 15.4" is to opt for a slower processor :/

I'm concerned it won't be able to cope with future games because I plan to keep this laptop for a while for gaming.

I assume the processor update path for this model would accept the T9600 because around 2.80GHz would be what I'd want to aim for. I don't see a point taking all the trouble just to update it to anything below 2.60Ghz.

I'm more of a software person than a hardware person so have next to no knowledge about updating processors. So if I ever do upgrade I'd take it to a laptop specialist.

Basically I'd like to know firstly if it's even a good idea to upgrade, if going from the processor quoted in my sig to T9600 actually works and how much this model can upgrade to.

    Any advice would be appreciated.

Your video card will become obsolete faster than your processor. I really wouldn't worry about it too much. :)
Plus, games are more GPU limited than CPU, I doubt you'd really see a difference, if any. Just enjoy your laptop. :)

lol ok, hopefully that won't happen too fast with the one I have.

Hmm, I suppose the best reason to upgrade in that case would be if I was on 1.6Ghz and things were running slowly. But mine's lightning fast for general tasking on 2.0Ghz. I think I'd sooner be upgrading to a new laptop in a few years anyway before I find the processor starting to lag. Thanks very much :)

I would not upgrade the processor in your laptop. It's far more difficult and time consuming, let alone it voids your warranty which may be needed some day. While the processor does have an impact on certain games, i'm not so sure the voided warranty is worth it. It's not as easy to just simply upgrade a laptop processor, but you might be lucky enough to find a short tutorial.

If you really feel like doing so, the T9600 processor is about 335 quid.

The T9400 is about 170 quid.

There's very little difference between the T9400 and T9600.

    I hope that helps.

If you're lagging, go through your computer services and turn off unneeded resources.

Sorry, my internet lagged out horribly. Can a mod delete the extra posts?

    I like that your lagging-advice lagged :)

oh, and, i have a core2duo 1.2ghz ULV and it's fast enough for most stuff including some gaming (but the gpu is horribly slow here :)).

i can watch hd 720p by cpu only, etc, too.

so forget about the need to speed up your cpu. tweak your system (serviced and such) as needed, update your drivers, and if you want to spend money: one day upgrade your harddrive to an ssd to get a real feelable speedboost.

if you now spend huge amount of work to replace your 2.0 ghz by say 2.4ghz, you won't notice any difference in usage, you'll be able to measure some difference depending on the tools you use, maybe in some games, too. but in the end, you'll not feel satisfied. it does not really do much.

Wow ok, I didn't think it would be quite that much!

I disabled a few when I first got it and that definitely made it run and start up a lot faster. I still plan to go through one of those big lists and just disable as much as possible for the things I'm totally sure I'm not using, so yep that will help too, thanks :)

I thought that might be the case, plus I'm always kind of worried about having someone open up the main case, I do like the idea of still having a valid warranty.

Alright, I can definitely see that upgrading wouldn't be worth it in my case, because my processor works perfectly fine and it's nice and fast.

I'll just ignore the red x's I get on processor part of those "Can My PC Run This Game?" tools lol

Thanks for all the advice :)
