So I bought a sealed box 8530w off eBay. Now I know from previous HP business models that the warranty start date on the online lookup tool starts from the day the laptop was manufactured. This hasn't ever been an issue in the past, since I got previous laptops second hand anyway.

But this one is already nearly 6 months into its 3 year warranty. I guess it has been sitting around sealed in its box for a while.

    So...

    1. Is there any way I can get HP to update the warranty start date? (I'm getting an invoice from the seller as we speak)

    2. Assuming I can, will that new warranty start date be reflected in the online lookup?

    3. Will the new warranty start date be transferable if I sell the laptop, or will it only apply to me, with my name on the invoice?

I would best say this deserves a call to HP, once you have your documentation I don't see why they couldn't update the records to show you as owner and serial, etc. if not, well, you still have 2.5 years on it right? :)

I am not familiar with Business class procedures but in working with consumer level stuff, HP has a procedure called a POP (Proof of Purchase) Request whereby, if it is incorrect in the system you can have the warranty status updated by providing proof of purchase. Takes a few days to go through but once its done it should reflect the purchase date as shown on your invoice. Again not sure if this applies to Business class laptops but if it doesn't there is probably something similar that you can do. As RW-One mentioned try to contact HP support and ask them.

Ok, thanks for the info. I will contact HP once I have the invoice and will report back
    .
The reason I'm asking/worried about it is that the laptop was sold as having a full 3 year warranty. So if I decide to on-sell it in a years time, instead of having 2 years left, it would only have 1.5 years left for the second owner. therefore I would rather recoup any losses now from my original seller, rather than have to wear it myself when I sell. I reckon 6 months business class onsite warranty is worth about 50-100 USD, no?

The person you bought this notebook from happens to not be an HP authorized reseller or distributor. In other words, the warranty started the day he bought the notebook originally and when he sold you the notebook, it transferred to you.

I'm not sure if HP will credit back the time. Contact the seller and let them know you didn't get what you paid for.

Just like Infamous mentioned, if the seller was not an authorized reseller with HP then the warranty started when he purchased it. There is nothing you can do about that, other than complain to the seller.

Well, it turns out all you have to do is fire off an email to [email protected] with your invoice attached and tell them you want your warranty start date updated and they do the rest.

It took them a few days to reply, and they have said...
"We have received the proof of purchase that was sent below and we are sending the serial number to have the warranty updated."

    and

"Please allow 3-4 business days for the system to reflect correct entitlement."

And they provided a link to the warranty lookup tool. So hopefully in a few days the new date will show up on there.

Also, I did not buy from an HP Authorized Reseller, and when I did ask that question through the normal support channel, they said it doesn't have to be from an authorized one.

    I hope this helps others.
