Can I replace my existing optical drive with a LG GMA-4080N DVD writer? I want DVD-RAM capability.

Yes, the service guide for this model should tell you all you need to know on how to upgrade.

Just make sure you verify the dimensions of the drive will fit into the unit. I know brands like Panasonic will not fit 100% as they are longer by a few mm's. Also, the new HP business units use a slimmer 9.5mm height drive rather than the standard 12mm.

You may want to check with www.UltraDrives.com and see if they have this drive. If they do, send them an email to see if it'll fit your unit.

I swapped a combo drive in a Presario for an NEC dvd burner without any trouble. Most likely your silver Presario will have a black bezel. You probably going have to take off the keyboard to get access to the drive, at least I did. The procedure was covered in the manual in my case. As someone who has owned a DVD-RAM drive, they're not all that great in my opnion, unless you are doing frequent backups that change a lot. I have a NEC 6500. The burn quality on it is very good unlike a lot of other laptop burners I've seen. The newer 6650 is available at NewEgg:

That's interesting, it does both DVD+R DL and DVD-R DL at 4x speeds. I didn't know there was a DVD-R DL standard.

Yes, I wanted DVD-RAM for backup and archive purposes. DVD-RAM is the only standard that has defect management.

If you are looking for a backup solution, an external hard drive might not be a bad Idea. You could mirror the data on your laptop to the external. Then the if one breaks you'll have a copy. The number of DL you burn will be very small, I would be much more interested in quality burns at which the NEC excels. Good Luck.
