I have an HP dv9308nr that came with 1GB of RAM, or according to the HP site: 1024MB DDR2 System Memory (2 Dimm). The second I got it, I upgraded it to 2GB so I could run Vista. I wanted to upgrade to 4GB, but I read somewhere that the dv9308nr could only support 2GB Max.

The laptop has 2 slots, so can my laptop support 2x2GB RAM sticks for 4GB or is it restricted to 2x1GB Max for 2GB?

Check with HP, most laptops that were sold a year ago could only use 2gigs even though you can technically install more. So it's very likely the dv9380nr can only use 2gb of ram.

Oh, is that how they order it? so the last digit is 0-F and not a part of the first number? So I guess my laptop should technically be able to support 4GB.

Think of the order of numbers going like this, from lower/older to higher/newer...

    00-09
    0A-0F
    10-19
    ...
    30-39
    3A-3F

So F.3x is newer than F.2x. And, for instance, F.3F is newer than F.39. And I don't think HP removed support for 4 GB after adding it.

I am running F.3E [came on the laptop after my system board had to be replaced] and have 3 GB [1 + 2 GB] running perfectly fine in Vista Home Premium 32-bit w/ SP1. :)

Ok. my RAM is PC2-5300 667 MHz. I'm assuming I can use PC2-4300 or PC2-3200 because I cannot find PC2-5300 2x2GB sticks anywhere.

    search a little harder....

the pc 5300 / 667 mhz ram sticks are the most common right now. even pc 6400 / 800 mhz will work. but take this as a sidenote - santa rosa based notebooks will not make use of 800mhz, but it will downclock the 800mhz sticks to 667mhz.

so basicly you should go for 667 mhz or 800 mhz, both will work.
    ;)
