As long as get a 2.5 SATA drive, you should be fine. Just make sure to transfer the drive caddy and adapter to the new drive............
Note: If you are running XP and not cloning, you will need to slipstream the SATA drivers to an XP installation disc using nlite (or disable SATA/AHCI support in BIOS). -
Any 2.5" SATA drive will work, though the HP Mobile Data Protection System 3D won't work on most of them. Just keep that in mind when you upgrade the drive.
I'm pretty sure that HP had a 100GB 7200RPM drive that was available on the nx9420 (I know they did on the nw8440 and nw9440). Perhaps you could look for that particular part off HP's website. You definitely won't get the best price, but you'll have a much better chance of getting the Mobile Data Protection System 3D to work with it, if that feature is important to you. -
Also, when you are upgrading remember you don't need to get a SATA 300 (aka SATA 3.0)HDD, because the motherboard on HP laptops only support SATA 150 (aka SATA 1.5). If you do get the SATA 300, it will still work, but only at SATA 150 speeds. So it would just be a little waste of money.
It is very easy to install though. If you are replacing a HDD all you have to do is swap out the adapter and the cradle, if you are adding a new HDD then you have to purchase the SATA adapter and the HDD cradle to install it on the laptop. The adapter and kit runs for about $40. -
Can i put in SATA 2-300 HD Seagate or Hitachi...
And which one i s better???
Thanks -
As I stated in my previous post, you only need to get a SATA 1.5 (also called SATA 150), because that is the standard used by your motherboard for the SATA port. You can purchase the SATA 3.0 (also called SATA 300), but it will only run at the 1.5Gb/s. Here are some Hitachi's to choose from:

If you want other options besides Hitachi's, here are the SATA 300's that Newegg offers:

Ok, thanks I have read that...
But it is written this is SATA II disk, this is mine question- can I use it in 9420... -
There are only 2 kinds of SATA HDD Standards, which are the ones I listed above, basically SATA I is the 1.5 and SATA II is the 3.0. So if you read my previous posts, you will see they are both compatible with one another, regardless of what computer or brand of computer you are using.
