What should I look for in terms of compatibility for upgrading a processor? I have a dv9743cl at the moment with the T7250 processor.

    Other specs:
    Intel X25-M 80GB SSD
    Windows 7 64bit
    4GB ram
    Nvidia 8600GS

Part of the problem I'm having when looking into what would work would be the specs I should look for in terms of compatibility. What should I look for to see if that would work?

look for the highest rated cpu that will work/fit with the MB/chipset . In my case the x-9000 was the one that would work with the MB/chipset . My guess is t-7800 or the x-9000 would be your choice for ultimate upgrade .
The x-9000 on mine runs cooler than the t-7500 did , reduced die size .

are these your specs , and did you post at hp forums
    CPU: 65nm Merom @ 2.0GHz, 0.9v, 2MB L2, 35W TDP
    Mobo: Quanta 30CB v79.29, Intel PM965 rev C0, HP F.51 BIOS

I didn't post at HP forums, but those seem to be my specs. I ran PC Wizard and this is what it came up with:

    Mainboard : Quanta 30CB
    Chipset : Intel GM965
    Processor : Intel Core 2 Duo Mobile T7250 @ 2000 MHz
    Physical Memory : 4096 MB (2 x 2048 DDR2-SDRAM )
Video Card : NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GS
Hard Disk : INTEL (80 GB)
Hard Disk : WDC (160 GB)
    DVD-Rom Drive : Slimtype DVD A DS8A1H ATA Device
    Monitor Type : LGPhilipsLCD - 17 inches
Network Card : Wireless WiFi Link 4965AGN
Network Card : RTL8168/8111 PCIe Gigabit Ethernet Adapter
    Operating System : Windows 7 Ultimate Professional 6.01.7600 (x64)
    DirectX : Version 11.00
    Windows Performance Index : 4.6

    Processor
    Cache L1 : 2 x 64 KB
    Cache L2 : 2048 KB
    Voltage VID : 1.013 V
    FPU Coprocessor : Present
    Core 1 Activity : 12%
    Core 2 Activity : 8%

    MB
    Manufacturer : Hewlett-Packard
    Mainboard : Quanta 30CB
    Bios : Hewlett-Packard
    Chipset : Intel GM965
    Physical Memory : 4096 MB DDR2-SDRAM
    LPC bus : Yes
    PCI Bus : Yes
    Bus PCI-Express : Yes
    USB Bus : Yes
    SMBus/i2c Bus : Yes
    Bus HyperTransport : No
    Bus QPI : No
    Bus CardBus : No
    Bus FireWire : Yes

From what I read on the GM965 it can support the X9000 with the T9500 and T9300 being up there. I was considering the T9x00 processors, but the X9000 is now a option.

Availability of these items seems to be a issue when I looked up for prices. They don't seemed to be in stock (new not used) in most places I've looked.

Could get a 200->250Mhz FSB overclock by following instructions shown here. That would give you [email protected] operation. Same idea applies if upgrading to say a T9300. The OP has a [email protected]. For OC purposes, a T9300 would be a better purchase than a T9500, since a [email protected] is less likely to work.

I'm running the T9500 because the heat load is the same as the T7700 it came with. The X-9000 had a higher rating and I didn't want to take the chance of over heatining.

the x-9000 runs much cooler than my t-7500 the laptop came with , but the price is high , not really worth the $$ over a t-9500 for such a small gain

I seem to be having a issue of finding any of the processors (in box new)...which is kinda a bottle neck at the moment.

Ya I'm coming up dry with my hunting for a processor.

I did come across the Toshiba X505-Q880 and X505-Q879 which I may actually end up getting...plenty of room on the desk for 2 laptops :)
