Greetings everyone!
I have done some tinkering with my DV6 that will hopefully pay off.
My DV6 3143 came with an i3 370m and the 5650 mobility. Of course it likes to overheat. Stock during gaming it would typically throttle the CPU within 15 min of playing Skyrim (my CPU throttles at 90C).
Applying Gelid GC Extreme would get me an extra 15 min of throttle free playing. Good, but not good enough.
I then tried to apply GPU ram heatsinks inside my laptop on top of the CPU and heatpipes. Again, an extra 15 min of throttle free playing (still it would eventually hit 90C)
So i decided to try adding this heatsink i found on Ebay instead of the stock one. This is designed for a Quad core CPU (45 watt), but it looked like it would still mount on my mobo and fit in my case, so I gave it a try...
EDIT - I did notice that the fans were different specs (same voltage, different amperage) so I put my stock Fan on the upgraded heatsink just to make sure it woud be compatibile.
So far it looks good. I did a 15 min run of OCCT (gpu test) and HyperPI simultaneaously, and the CPU max was 83C, GPU max was 74C. Previously, this would max my CPU at 90C after 3-5 min or so and it would throttle down to 2.1ghz ish from the 2.4ghz it is supposed to run at.
EDIT - another thing that I have noticed so far is that my fan speeds are more consistent. It would previously ramp up in RPM's, and then back down every minute or two. So far, none of that yet...
I will have to post better numbers if I get the time.
