First, I sincerely hope whoever designed the dv4t burns in hell.
After three stripped screws and re-applying the thermal paste three times, I am now happy with upgrading to t9900 from t9950. Idle temps are just a few degrees higher then the t9550. Load temps are higher too. My gpu temps are now the same as before which is a miracle since there is only one heat-pipe and fan cooling everything (cpu, gpu, and chipset). Was it worth it? Yea, the upgrade gave me a great experience with my laptop. I can now open my laptop without looking at any documentation![]()

First off, you're nuts. lol. Regarding the stripped screws, really the only thing they say you can do to avoid them is to use a sharp/high quality screwdriver. To unscrew a stripped screw, put some super glue on it and then make contact with the tip and let them fuse, then screw away.
I am not sure about the heat, if I had to guess I would blame the CPU for the extra heat, not a misapplication of thermal paste. I think thermal paste is better than thermal pads? I am pretty sure people recommend Arctic Silver paste over anything else. If I remember correctly, the optimum method is to clean the surface with isopropyl alcohol, and then apply a thin and even layer. You're going to need to double check on these, but hopefully my memory serves me right...
You're really nuts for upgrading your CPU from an already blazing T9550... lol.
OH. This I am certain of, and that's the maximum performance of the paste isn't immediate, it's going to take sometime for it to like bond properly or something.... so I would wait a bit (a few days?) and see if your temperatures decrease. -
I would think a t9900 in a dv4 is overkill.

Other notes:
The t9900 multiplier switches from either x6, x8, x11.5
Also, I can confirmed there is no pll/clock-gen on the motherboard. So forget about overclocking the cpu because it is not going to happen.
Here are some screenshots while idling (surfing the web on firefox).

the paste he used ic 7 requires no curing therefore what he sees now is what he will always see no matter how much time.
your right about the alcohol (the stronger the better) and then a very small layer of the paste. -
Nice job on the upgrade - this is exactly the mess I want to avoid and why I'm waiting for HP to offer the T9900 instead.

It just costs a lot more then what I paid for...

Hey Darth Bane,
How is your experience with T9900? Does it run hotter than your old T9550? Is there a noticeable performance increase over your old processor?
I am willing to upgrade my T9400 but still could not decide... Overall are you happy or do you feel regret?
Thanks...

One more question: I think you purchased your CPU from "computerupgradekings" on ebay. Did you get your CPU on time? How was the packaging? Would you buy anything else from him in the future?
Thanks again,

Obviously temps are higher, but only by a few degrees. The fans don't turn up very high unless I am gaming intensely. Thankfully, despite a higher clocked cpu, my gpu temps are staying the same.
T9900 + highly oc 105m = happy gamer ^^ (of course I play mostly rts)
Do I regret it? No. But i am pretty pist about stripping some of my screws
I notice you are using an asus laptop. If you can easily replace the cpu, then by all means upgrade. I can't imagine you having worse cooling then the dv4t which only uses a single fan and heatpipe to cool EVERYTHING.

Thanks so much! You have been one of the very helpful people @NBR. I wish I could give you more reps but the system does not accept consecutive reps to the same person.
Thanks again... I think some of my next month's salary will go to computerupgradekings...

I have never had a problem taking apart an HP laptop you just arent that good i gusse. Practice makes perfect.

okay, so just because you never had problems must mean everyone else who does must automatically not be good. Good logic there.
I do agree practice makes perfect. After taking it apart so many times, I can do it in a heartbeat -
I am now a T9900 user too!!
There was something interesting that I haven't observed in my old T9400. I think Intel has added the "Turbo Boost" technology (which dynamically overclocks the CPU if you are running single threaded apps) to the T9900. Although the multiplier of T9900 is 11.5 (11.5 x 266 = 3.06) sometimes the multiplier jumps to 12 and the CPU runs at 3.2GHz.
Below is the screenshot that I got in my laptop:

I think you might find it's a Montevina special, ie low cost no frills -
I bought a t9900 from computerupgradeking too and it arrived as advertised. I disassembled a dv3t to put it in. I ended up with one stripped screw, one broken tab on the chassis (doesn't affect anything), but my real mistake was in pulling out the fan connector, I broke the plastic piece that holds the wires. So my connector involves a little tape now - but the fan still works
I do think HP needs to reconsider sticking a panel on the bottom of these things to get to the cpu - shouldn't have to disassemble the whole thing.
I used OCZ's thermal paste on the cpu. Don't have temps yet - will work on that.
N
PS - Thank you so much for the superglue idea to remove stripped screws - fantastic - never thought of that - rep for you -
Can any of you with the t9900 tell me what temps you're seeing?
N -
However this cannot be a reference for you since the cooling systems of the laptops directly affect the temp of CPU. T9900 may run at 40C in one machine whereas it may run @55C in another machine.

HP's do really suck for upgrading. I feel your pain of stripped screws. I get so mad when that happens.
