Hey guys, thanks to your help and ebay, I upgraded my zv6130 which came originally with the 939 socket 3200+ Atlon 64 CPU to an appropriate 4000+ 2.4ghz CPU.
I used some arctic silver I had laying around and applied in a small 'X' pattern on the new CPU after cleaning the thermal module/heatsink properly w/97% alcohol.
I also upgraded the Memory inside the chassis for a total of 2G of Kingston ValueRam. I had an existing stick of 1GB in the easy to reach spot for some time now and replaced the internal 256 w/another stick w/the same model number though the timings were slightly different IIRC. Voltage is the same for both though.
I installed Speedfan and the Core and Temp1 temps are fairly reasonable considering the 75degree Farenheit ambient room temp. I'm getting about 45 and 49degrees respectively.
However, the laptop will randomly shut down completely like I just disconnected the power cord from the wall. Reboots fine but might do it again in 5 minutes or so. I bought the chip from ebay and for the first few weeks, the laptop has been perfectly fine. It just started doing this yesterday and I'm a little puzzled. Any ideas?

Thats really strange. Most of the time that type of shutdown is for some type of thermal protection but your temps are fine. If you still have the old hardware do the usual "replace the hardware till it doesn't happen" and see whats causing it.

Thanks, yeah I was going to start w/the memory since the only other suspect is the CPU. Fortunately, I haven't bolted anything back together just in case...
I thought this would hold me off from getting another laptop but the 14-15" HPs are starting to look good again

Quick question, removing the new RAM seems to have no effect but I'm curious about the onboard fan...I hear the fan running and the temps according to speedfan are within reason, but I feel no air coming FROM the chassis. Even putting a piece of paper next to the vents, there is no ruffling when the fan is running under load. This is different from before I tore the laptop down.
I'm almost positive the fan connector only plugs in one way but I'm wondering if I possibly reversed polarity and the fan is pulling heat onto the CPU and thermal module/heatsink instead of the reverse??
Also, has anyone left the silver tape off permanently that cover the internal memory slot? I reapplied it after installing the new RAM but it's a pain to remove/reapply since it tears easily. I don't see how the keyboard/keys above could contact the memory slot
Thanks guys! -
Well I pulled the new RAM stick and after a few days of running system scans while running a dozen internet tabs and other programs simultaneously, the laptop has crashed or powered off. So it seems that the RAM is a problem. I hate that because it was $50 and I threw away the packaging right away since I've never had issues w/Kingston RAM...
The Athlon 64 4000+ (2.4ghz)coupled with 1GB of RAM is not a very pleasant place right now...I think the RAM had a bigger impact than the CPU...
EDIT: Running Speedfan again with the single stick of RAM and now, while running the same internet/applications, the temp1 temp is down a whole 10degrees, to 39! Core still fluctuates between 48-52 while under load but I wonder why the temp1 difference?
