I've found someone says that I can replace cpu as long as my motherboard supports it from tomshardware forum.

so, DV5178us uses i945pm chip in motherboard. and theoredically I can use Core2Duo cpu which has 667 FSB ( so up to T7600 ).

But the other problem is, one Acer user says that his laptop doesn't boot up with the new CPU (the new one is T7200) but old one.

Also, he mentions he needs to modify Bios so that motherboard can rekon the new CPU. and some say because the most manufacturers make a limit there laptop's BIOS, we need to edit it to rekon cpu. Is it true?

If I replace CPU like T7600, do I need to edit BIOS too?

    Here is his post.
\My Asus A8Ja came with Intel Core Duo T2300E and i945PM chipset (full main spec in my signature). What I've been trying to do is to replace the T2300E (Yonah) ("E" meaning lack of virtualisation) with a T7200 (Merom). As you can see in the chart, the i945PM is compatible with Merom too. Both CPUs are of the same package type (Socket 479 mPGA). The T7200 is reported to be tested as working.

Without modding the BIOS, the laptop did not boot with the T7200 installed, which is understandable. Then I used MMTOOL to copy the T7200 microcode (CPUID: 06F6) from the Asus A8Jp (which came with T7200) BIOS to A8Ja BIOS and flashed it, but the laptop still refused to run along with the T7200 (lights, fan and hard drive on, but black screen, and one touch on power button swtiches off instantly).

The laptop works again with the T2300E put back.

So the question is: what else am I meant to modify? Or is this a case of hardware limitation? (although I'm sure the both CPUs use a similar voltage of around 1.2V)

And the more risky question: if the A8Jp's motherboard only differs by having an SATA controller instead of PATA, would it work if I modify the A8Jp BIOS's platform ID to match the A8Ja, and then flash it? Or would this be suicidal?

Well, as long as you have BIOS ver F.17A and newer, it should support the Core 2 Duo processors. However, the BIOS might not necessarily support the newer revisions of the Core 2 Duo since the dv5000t was off the market before the Core 2 Duo's were released and there wont be any newer BIOS updates from HP. In that case you will most likely have to edit the BIOS, otherwise as long as you have the newer BIOS, running a C2D shouldnt be a problem. Have you searched the web to see if any other users of the dv5000t series have successfully done such an upgrade? (doesnt have to be the same exact model, as long as it is the same series is fine)
