I have a CQ60 with a cracked CCFL screen. I have decided to replace the screen, even if the machine is a bit old.
Is it possible to put in a LED screen instead?
For example this one
LED lcd SCREEN+Cable fits HP COMPAQ PRESARIO CQ60-417CA | eBay
I do not know enough about how the LED LCDs are powered to understand if this is feasible. I am comfortable working inside the laptop, and have replaced several screens before.
Original CCFL panel:

This says that I have a 30 pin connector on the panel.
LED panel:

This says the LED panel is 40 pin. However, I do not know if the motherboard side is any different, such that I could get away with just using a separate cable.
Here is a cable for using a LED screen in a CCFL machine, or at least that is what I think idea is. I guess I want something that goes the other way around!

Hi there!
Yes it is possible, although is not typically recommended.
These cables were specifically designed for LTN160AT01 which is a very rare 16" CCFL screen, which is used in several current laptops but is not longer manufactured.
Theoretically this cable should work for a 15.6" panel, but we have not tried that.
LaptopScreen.com does have the cable you need: http://www.laptopscreen.com/img/screens/1_big/W11_w_inv_adapter.jpg
And the cost for it is $10 on top of your order.
If you do order from LaptopScreen.com, there is no way to add this cable to the order, so you'll have to call in (or submit a support ticket) and ask for the "W11" cable to be added to your 15.6" screen order. Also please note you will need the "right side connector" LED screen.
As well, since this is not officially recommended, you might consider adding the Return Shipping Insurance during the check out, that way in case the screen does not work for you, it will cost you $6 to return it back.
Overall, there's no real advantages to having an LED screen in that computer, and would just cost ~$15 more than CCFL screen, but you'll have a bit of a mess with your cabling.
P.S. Again these cables were developed for 16" screens which cost starting from $250 nowadays as opposed to a $60 LED equivalent. -
i've got an Hp Compaq CQ60 and i've bought B156XW02 v6 LED monitor (because my CCFL has broken a few months ago) and an adaptor cable for LTN160AT01 that have a board with several plug on it for the different models (Acer, Dell, HP); i plugged properly the cables but the monitor seems switched off. Actually it is switched on and for see what it show i have to light it with a lamp!! Can u tell me something about? if u have any idea;
The monitor and the cable that i've bought should work together? i've tried to invert the flat that goes from the board (of the adaptor) to the monitor and nothing happens, exactlly the same! i'm also worried about a thing and that: while all was connected plugged and powered i plugged off the same little flat from the board of the adaptor and than plugged in again and in this moment i've seen smoke and there was a smell of burning but after I've tested the cable with my professional tester and it's ok! -
You can use the cable they sell for the 16" LED screen to power up a 15.6" LED screen, but those screens are different and you get different results. I have tried the Chunghwa screen and many other LED screens on Toshiba, dell and HP laptops. In most cases you WILL need this thing
or buy a cable that comes with this attached.

That cable works on both the 16 inch and the 15.6 inch LED backlight screens. Or, you can get the cable for the 15.6 screens that has many ports on a little circuit board.
If you have connected an LED screen and you have display but no backlight, then you're gonna need that little inverter type thing. So before you start off buying stuff, look into that 16" toshiba compatible cable that has that inverter with it.
My lenovo g555 needed it, the toshiba a505 and L505 series laptops also need that additional part. One of the HP lit up without it, god knows why, but a CQ60 did not, and had to get the inverter thing installed.
Or if all fails, you can always use the backlight from the cracked CCFL screen and use the LCD from the new LED screen. All you'll have to do, is disassemble it all, disconnect the LED wire from the new screen, take the new display as whole and apply it on top of the working CCFL backlight panel, and use only the display plug from your laptop to the converter cable, and your inverter to power the CCFL backlight.

Billa48, where do you plug in the little white plug on the LCD cable for the CQ60? I looked at that green inverter thing, and I am positive none of those outlets will fit that plug. I'm thinking that you plug it in at the junction point where the yellow cable meets the brown ribbon cable. I have an Acer 5335 that I'm trying to convert the CCFL screen, which broke, to the cheaper LED screen and that plug at the junction point...I know....would fit...just like the CQ60. Am I right?
