I'm currently using dv1000t with 2x256 mb running on dual channels.
If i upgrade one of the slot to 1gb (1024 +256), is there any risk since i'm using two different size RAMs? I'm concern about the stability issues.

What about the speed? Will the 1270ish ram be a significantly faster than 512 mb ram running on dual channels?

    I really appreciate any input
    thx

There will be no adverse impacts. Running 2 equal sized RAM sticks will enable dual channel memoy which will provide more bandwidth.

Nope, there wont be any issues with running un equal sticks and it will be faster than 512MB dual. The bandwidth might be doubled with dual channel but is left unusedmost of the time. So having more RAM is definately better than having less RAM with dual channel.

I just recently upgraded my DV1000 from 2x256MB to 256MB+512MB and I can tell you that the extra RAM by far exceeds whatever benefits dual-channel may have been providing.

On another note, in order to have Duel Channel, do both sticks have to be from the same manufacturer? i.e. can combine Kingston with whatever ram the Laptop came?

You can combine RAM the from different manufacturers, they just have to have the same specifications.
