I have a DV9500, RL653AV, that HP gave to me last year after my ZD8000 burnt out (mobo fried, common with it). Since this one has served me well I'd like to upgrade it. I've given up completely on Age of Conan (when people with GTX 280's aren't getting high fps, I know it isn't me!). But would like optimized performance in other games.
Right now I have:
Intel Core 2 Duo T7700 2.4ghz
Quanta 30CB mobo
2GB RAM (It is PC5300)
Nvidia GeForce 8600M GS
2 x 120 GB HDD's 5400 RPM
My main concerns are the GPU (video card), HDD speed, and adding more RAM.
Will this RAM work in my unit? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231164
And would it be possible to use faster? (I think this is the equivalent to what I have now). This is 667 I think, and would like faster. Wondering if this would work? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820227251 I can't find much info about what I can and can't use in my laptop.
I think I may take out of my drives and put in a 10,000 RPM drive for OS and games. Will I notice a difference if I do?
How do I go about upgrading my video card? Right now I am most concerned with that. I was told my CPU is unlikely to bottleneck in games so my concern has lead to that. I think my CPU is OK for now. Is it possible to OC CPU's in laptops? And could someone tell me how to and what is safe for what I currently have.
I'm going to get a laptop cooler when I buy upgrades. How does this one look? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834998051
Thanks in advance.![]()

Questions answered sequentially.
Yes.
No. Laptop is limited to 667 MHz RAM.
There are no 10k RPM 2.5" SATA drives to my knowledge. Plus it would only help with load times.
Your graphics card cannot be upgraded. Your CPU does not need to be overclocked. Your bottleneck is easily the graphics card, by a long shot.
With the 8600m GT, I get ~30FPS at WXGA on High in AoC, which is more than acceptable.

Take a trip to newegg.com. They even make 15,000, see here: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822116081

You're quite lucky.
"Your CPU does not need to be overclocked."
That doesn't tell me how to. Technically nothing needs to be OC'ed, people do it all the time with their CPU, RAM, and GPU's. -
Good luck trying to get a SCSI drive to work on your SATA mobo.
Luck has nothing to do with my AoC performance. I do not OC my GPU, nor my CPU. I also stick with older, more stable drivers over the newer, faster ones. Thus my performance should easily be replicatable by anyone with a similar machine. Anyone having problems running AoC with an nVidia 280 GTX is experiencing user error.
Again, overclocking your CPU would be a waste of time. You would be potentially risking your laptop for absolutely no noticeable gains whatsoever. -
Lithus is right at all counts.
As for OC, people do it all the time in desktops. Notebooks are different due to insufficient cooling
