    Hi guys,

I've recently performed a couple of System Recovery procedures (restoring the laptop to factory condition) and a friend asked me to do it to her Compaq Presario CQ60. But disaster has reared it's ugly head...

This is what I have done -

    1. Took all files (pictures/ word documents) from the Compaq and stored them on my own laptop.
    2. Hit the F11 key at the BIOS screen to access the System Recovery screen.
    3. Ticked the box that said "Perform System Recovery"
    4. Immediately received a message saying "Error 1002: Please contact HP for further support".
    5. The computer rebooted and now all I get is the message "BOOTMGR is missing"...

I can still access the System Recovery menu, although it always results in Error 1002, followed by "BOOTMGR is missing" on restart. The first time I tried the recovery procedure I attempted to recover it from the HDD Partition. I have since tried using recovery disks that were created at a much earlier date but the Error 1002 pop's up at some point after disk 2 has been inserted.

I really, REALLY need some help here! Professional recovery is out of the question and I can't take this computer back in it's present condition...

Any advice you can give would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks in advance!

    EDIT:

Ok, just tried running a command prompt through the Recovery Manager to fix this BOOTMGR issue.

    "Bootrec /fixboot"

Said the operation completed successfully although when I rebooted I still got the message saying "BOOTMGR is missing". So I just tried to recover using the disk again and it got to 80% of the first step (reformatting the partition) and I got a slightly different error - ERROR 1005: contact HP for further support.

    HELP!!!

    EDIT again!

Ok now after the BIOS screen where it briefly allows you to hit an F key to perform various functions, I just get a black screen with a single flashing underscore in the top left corner. No matter what F key I press on the BIOS screen thingy this keeps happening. This is getting supah serious...

    :(

You will need a retail version of the Windows 7 installation DVD. The link below will provide the steps to take. Relax - odds are good that only your bootmgr files were corrupted. Nothing else. Though, IMO, given from what you are describing as a bad install from the OEM recovery partition, I would probably look into wiping the entire HDD clean and replacing the recovery partition with whatever media she provided you (she should have made the OS recovery DVD's when prompted by the PC). Links to the file(s) to create a Windows 7 DVD are here on the forums as well.

Ahhh! Thanks so much for the reply! I notice reading my OP back that I (retardedly) forgot to mention that it is Vista 32bit. Is there a similar solution available? And what kind of equipment will I need to wipe the HDD and reinstall the OS? I am quite willing to do what it takes to sort this out, short of taking it to a specialist (who's will probably charge more than a new PC, they usually do..) if at all possible!

    Thanks again!
    Rep'd!

    EDIT:

Is it possible to do this using a bootable USB? The optical drive on my AW has been flat out refusing to burn anything to disk for the past few months.

I'm sorry, what was the point of your post? You're reiterating what someone has already asked. I answered them. You also made a pointless post in another topic that didn't contribute anything.

    ???

EDIT: Post made before this one has been deleted....my post is now invalid.

Wicked, thanks for the help! Although sadly it appears that it's beyond repair... When I run the Windows Repair Disk it doesn't even list the OS... I guess it's a full-on wipe of the HDD and a reinstall of Windows. Was really hoping to avoid this coz last time I checked those Windows disks cost an absurd amount of money. Really out of order that they don't ship disks with notebooks!! Anyway, I'm gonna have a look on the HP site and see if there are any drivers for Windows 7. I got a set of disks with my Alienware so with any luck... I should be able to dodge paying the £89 for a new set and (more to the point) avoid paying £54 to the nasty little POS man who offered me absolutely no help whatsoever in the local computer shop.

Once again, thanks very much for your help. You've been great!
