I followed this guide: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=120228 and found it really helpful in installing a clean copy of vista on my new DV2554ea.

I have a few questions though, firstly how do you reinstall apps/drivers like hp quicklaunch buttons etc via the SWSetup folder? How do I reinstall the DVD software that came with my laptop (i.e Roxio) which has the lightscribe software??

    Many thanks!

The SWSetup folder should contain the installation files for all the programs. Just run the setup file for each application you want to install and then follow the on screen prompts. Ofcourse the folder names are in shortform but should be easily identified. For example, there should a folder named QLB which is short for Quicklaunch buttons, similarly QPW for Quickplay. Roxio and Lightscribe should have something similar as well.

    Thanks for your quick reply!

Would Roxio be the preferred software to use for wrighting DVD's and labelling with lightscribe? Or are there better/faster applications?

I havent really used Lightscribe but Roxio is pretty good for basic burning and labelling. There are better options but you will have to pay to use most of those programs. It depends on how much you plan on sing Lightscribe or the DVD burning features.

When I replaced XP with Vista Ultimate the Roxio Easy Media Creator 9 Suite didn't really function well even though it says it's Vista compatable. Read the Roxio forum for problems you might encounter. I switched back to XP MCE.

I just followed the same instructions. The Vista install was fine, but now I can not set up my internet connection. Is is that I am missing the drivers? If so, where do I find them in the SWSetup disc?

    Thanks!

That was one of the problem with Roxio, it somehow disables IE7.

I am so glad to stumble upon this information. I saw the SWSetup folder but didn't know what it is for.

If you're enticed by the 50% Off upgrade offer, I highly recommend you do not upgrade the Roxio program. I did and it's been a nightmare. I am currently in the process of trying to get a refund.

The way in which Roxio/Sonic responded to me (with long instructions to manually clean the registry of it's junk...and to get back to them if it didn't work...and it didn't), I knew hordes of others must be having the same problem. They should just be up front and say their program isn't Vista compatible.

I've wasted hours on this and I'm mad because, after going through a long process of installing the upgrade, I not only did not have the upgrade but the Roxio basic no longer was usable. Now, finally, it is after using the SetUp in the SWSetup folder.

I'd also like to point out that, before learning about the ability to reinstall this program from the SWSetup folder, I restored the entire hard drive. But even with a clean install of the Roxio program, the upgrade doesn't take.

I also read in a digital photography forum that someone had problems with installying Nero 6. So before you install any burning software, know that you may have a long and painful road ahead of you until manufacturers get their act together with Vista.

Nero enhanced 7 is working great with vista for me as well as Power2go or Ashampoo Burning suite. You don't need to be locked to Roxio stuff!
