Can I use the older PA286A (Basic Port Replicator 04) or PA287A (Advanced Docking station) that do not have the "smart" power adapter with a fairly new HP laptop like HP 6510b?

I know that there are newer docking stations EN488AA and EN489AA that are supposed to be used with newer laptops. These were released in 2005 or 2006 and have the new "smart" bigger power connector with a small pin in the middle. Newer laptops do fit in the older docking stations without the older smaller power connector but is it safe to use it this way?

I have noticed that HP has released even newer docking stations (HP 2008 Docking Station). Does this mean I cannot even use EN488AA with a HP 2008 laptop model like HP 6730b?
