    I'm talking about the ones across the top of the keyboard (on the f5 to f8 keys) with the 'play/pause', 'stop', 'next', and 'back' buttons. How do I get these to work? The rest of the shortcut keys across my f9-f11 (volume control) and f1-f4 (miscellaneous stuff, like brightness and help buttons) all work. I just wanna be able to use the music ones.

    Specifically, I'm using the HP dm4t and I'd like this to work with my good ol' friend, Winamp.

    try using the fn key near your alt key with the corresponding f1-f12 key

    and these may work only with a few media players

    they for sure work with windows media player..others i'm not so sure

    play a song and then use em

    I remember the days where I would frustrate myself over this very scenario.

    fn + f keys

    I know, bit redundant right? Why would I need to press a "special function" button in conjunction with a button that's meant to be mapped to a special function? Anyway, my old Acer had something similar so it wasn't that hard to figure out, but still.

    So the global hotkeys thing worked, thanks :D.

    And apparently, judging from some responses, my keyboard is backwards lol? Because I have to press fn+f1, or fn+f2 to get to the f1 and f2 options. The default is help and lower brightness for those two keys. No idea if that made sense, but yeah. My weird keyboard XD. Ah well I'm used to it this way now.

    Because the function keys are used also as media keys, instead of dedicated media keys.

    That setting should be changeable in bios if you wish. The default is reversed, as someone thought that people rather use more play/pause functions than ALT-F4, F5 or similar.
